Has anyone successfully made poppadums?

I just CAN'T do it Grin and I am a pretty competent cook. The mixture always seems wrong and I can never get them thin enough. I use this recipe although without the asafoetida because I don't like the flavour-although I don't think it adds anything to the cooking process itself so shouldn't matter.

I go through a lot of poppadums and they're not the cheapest item. My local asda used to sell the uncooked ones which are much better value, but they've stopped stocking them and I don't shop at asda for anything else so wasn't ideal.

Oh wow, that is a phaff! My mum and grandma used to make their own but such a drama and a multi day activity. You really do need to roll them paper thin, they should be so thin you can read newspaper print through them. And then ages to dry out. Given the time and effort it takes, it must be easier to drive to your nearest Indian grocer and buy them.

This question reminds of a recipe which said ‘by your filo pastry’. Why would anyone want to spend their time making popadoms?

My grandad used to. Very easy. He’d been away with the army for a long time and learned to do it properly. I’ve watched 100 times. Copied exactly every step. I get terribly burned every time and it doesn’t work for me.

so it can be done but there’s obviously a “knack” I can’t get either.

I asked my daughter's mother in law how she made hers-she's a fantastic cook and has taught me loads of things-and she looked at me as if either I was insane or she didn't understand the question then kindly and gently directed me to the nearest Asian supermarket.

Asian supermarket is cheapest. Don't waste time/energy making your own, it's not cost effective

Yep this. The dough is delicious raw, but it's takes more than a day with multiple people helping! (I think though that was for a years supply)

Yes I have an Asian supermarket in the next town, guess I'll be going there!

This may be one of those things that I just accept defeat on!

I can't find them on amazon-I have got them from ebay before but they're £££.

Yes, I said my mum and grandma but what I meant was every woman in the neighbourhood. And they’d make so many that every household would have a years supply!
