Simple but spicy recipes

My teenagers love meals with a fair bit of kick to them - beef vindaloo, chicken jalfrezi, hot chilli con carne etc. I am running out of recipe ideas and all the cookbooks I’ve looked at require multiple trips to specialist Asian/Indian supermarkets. Any recipe ideas would be VERY much welcome!

Mexican wraps. Simple and tasty and also incredibly filling which is always a bonus! No cooking required.

Mash kidney beans with smoked paprika, cumin, chilli and mayonnaise. Season the mix with black pepper. Check for salt as most mayo is quite salty already. Add coriander if you like it. Can add finely diced onions. Lime juice adds a layer but not essential.

Put into wraps. Add as much or as little salad as you like eg grated carrot, lettuce, cucumber, cabbage/ coleslaw, peppers, onions, tomatoes. Sour cream to cool the chilli if too hot.

Eat!

Have you cooked with nduja. It's great in pasta dishes or on pizza and certainly has a kick.

LondonMummer · 20/05/2023 16:18

Mapo Tofu - you might need a couple of ingredients but you'll want to make it again and again anyway. I like Tim Anderson's recipe

SweetPeaPods · 20/05/2023 16:26

I do a nice teriyaki style chicken- honey, soy sauce and dried chilli - really easy, can add as much dried chilli as you want and great with rice or noodles.

Hazelnuttella · 20/05/2023 16:28

I do a very basic version of Singapore fried rice. It’s very tasty though.

Curry powder, garlic and ginger fried in oil, add frozen prawns, cooked peas and cooked rice and fry.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 20/05/2023 16:33

I like to make a really spicy tomato sauce, like pasta sauce, quite chunky. With loads of chilli. Sometimes add bacon or shredded ham.

I make it in a frying pan and then make dips in it, crack eggs into the dips, put the lid on for a minute ish till the whites are set. Serve with crusty bread and salad. And extra fresh chilli and spring onions on top.

I think there's a similar 'proper' dish, but I can't remember what it's called.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 20/05/2023 16:35

Sometimes I do chilli con carne without rice, but with corn on the cob, tortillas, guacamole, pico de gallo. That's nice in summer.

mrstea301 · 20/05/2023 16:37

I've made this a couple of times and find it really hot - almost too hot to be fair, and I like my spicy food! www.marionskitchen.com/10-minute-spicy-chilli-garlic-oil-noodles/

I've been using the Lee Kum Kee chilli oil for this.

Might also be worth checking out East by Meera Sodha? Loads of good recipes - it's worth buying for the kimchi stir fry alone!

ScottishBeth · 20/05/2023 16:38

There's a good salt and pepper chicken recipe on bbc good food. I add some chili to it, as there's none in the recipe. But is delicious.

Crummles · 20/05/2023 16:39

Jerk chicken or tandoori chicken using ready made paste or seasoning

CurlewKate · 20/05/2023 16:50

Get a tub of gogugyang. It's a really delicious chilli paste and you can chuck it into all sorts of things to make them spicy. Also, Chetna Makan on YouTube has lots of lovely really easy Indian recipes. Also, the kids are old enough to cook one meal a week each!

TakeMe2Insanity · 20/05/2023 16:56

Indian/Pakistani omelette : eggs, red onion, green chilli, tomato, fresh coriander, salt, pepper. Serve with roti.

I did a nice Malaysian curry the other day, so easy. I used a paste from a local supplier, but you could buy a jar of Thai curry paste from any supermarket. You can skip the fish sauce if you can't find it.

Slice a red onion thinly and cut a few slices of ginger into matchsticks
Heat up some oil and stir fry the onions and ginger until they start to soften.
Add a few tablespoons of curry paste and fry with the veg until the aroma starts to come out.
Add half a tin of coconut milk and mix thoroughly
Let it cook for around 15 minutes, adding a spoon of sugar, a spoon of Thai fish sauce and the juice of half a lime
Put some raw, deshelled and deveined king prawns and some tenderstem broccoli in for the final 4-5 minutes (you could improvise here with other meat or veg)
Add chopped coriander (I have some in the freezer) right at the end.

moggerhanger · 20/05/2023 16:58

One of my favourite quick dishes is: cooked red lentils, mixed with a spoonful of curry paste and a spoonful of mixed pickle or lime pickle. Simmer for a few minutes, and add chilli flakes if you like.

Clymene · 20/05/2023 16:58

This is super easy. Add in a good few tablespoons of harissa and some ras el hanout and it's good a good kick. You can also add a can of drained chickpeas to bulk it out

Thanks all for these suggestions - I obvs need to invest in some more pastes as my go-to is chilli flakes!

You'd be surprised at the variety available in places like Sainsbury's these days. We cook various outh and east Asian dishes from scratch with ingredients sourced from our local one.

MrsKippling · 21/05/2023 19:20

Nando's one pot chicken and rice I use the hot one rather than the medium mentioned in the recipe.

Buldak ramen This website has loads of ideas for spice lovers.

Wagamama firecracker chicken

I add jalapeños from a jar to this, shred the chicken and have on subs or buns

Crispy chilli beef fried rice

Singapore noodles

Garlic chilli chicken curry

Keema curry I stab green finger chilli's and add them whole to this.

Stock up on some nice hot sauces and add them to anything you fancy.

SavBlancTonight · 21/05/2023 19:25

We do a vaguely Asian style mince and noodle dish with pork.mince. saute onions garlic ginger lemongrass. Stir fry the mince and chilli. Add chopped veg like baby corn, carrots, broccoli. Lots of lime juice and soy sauce. And straigh to wok noodles. V popular.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 21/05/2023 20:46

I every so often stock up on Gochuchang, another Korean chilli paste I can’t remember the name of, and Thai curry pastes and do all sorts.
Vegan Richa is a good website and you could always Chuck in some meat if needed

Theimpossiblegirl · 21/05/2023 20:49

Can't go wrong with a Thai curry. Chicken, veg or both. A jar of paste and a tin of coconut milk.

Littlefish · 21/05/2023 21:06

Thai curry? There are some excellent curry pastes around - spice kitchen is one of them.

I make this quite often but with frozen onions, chickpeas and fresh or frozen spinach so its really easy. Chuck in some pickled chilli too so the heat level can be upped easily. With no chicken and ready chopped onion it can cook in the same time it takes to cook the rice.

Chilli Chicken Balti
