Transportable (on foot) desserts - BBQ season

As a group of friends we take it in turns to host probably once every couple of months. Host cooks the main, 2 couples take nibbles & starters, 2'take dessert. I'm usually one of the dessert people as the others 'fight' over doing starters. We've been doing this for a long time so am running out of ideas. i know they'd be happy if I made sticky toffee pudding each time, having a 'change' doesn't seem to bother them (one couple always takes chocolate mousse; another alternates between trifle and pavlova. ) But i like variety.

criteria:
I want to be able to transport it on foot.
Don't want to do much once i get there other than a little assembly if needed.
only dietary requirement is one person is dairy free but I can generally work round that.
My DH not keen on cheesecake.
Happy for various fruit salads to be accompaniments but not the main dessert.

I would like to avoid chocolate mousse, trifle, pavlova, cheesecake for reasons outlined above
As the weather improves we'll move to barbecuing. i really don't want to be barbecuing fruit etc, especially as we've often moved indoors by dessert time but would like it to follow on well from bbq food:

What would you make that meets the above criteria?

S'mores are a great shout because you can heat them over the BBQ, or bananas wrapped in foil with chocolate on top - it melts deliciously!

Limoncello tiramisu is delicious and can be made with dairy free cream too 😊

I was going to say tiramisu, but that's maybe just trifle. Jelly with fruit in always goes down well here as a childhood throwback, do it in a plastic salad bowl. Otherwise fruit salad (especially if you take Pimm's), fairy cakes, summer pudding

Brownies. Can make all different varieties and easy to make dairy free

TheFlis12345 · 19/05/2023 11:46

Brownies with ice cream and berries?

OMGitsnotgood · 19/05/2023 11:55

Brownies, berries & ice cream sound perfect, though they only have a small freezer so nowhere to store ice cream. Could serve with cream/dairy free cream i guess.

Eton mess. You'd need a separate portion for the dairy free person.

Grilled pineapple with mint and malibu glaze

cocksstrideintheevening · 19/05/2023 12:46

(Grill the pineapple after dinner obvs!)

Ignore me - just saw your point about grilling fruit.

Chocolate brownies. Use Nigella's recipe. Make a strawberry or raspberry coulis and whip some cream. Best pudding ever!

Pie or flan or tarts. Can use fruits that are seasonal. Or make Amish type pies like shoo fly pie
I’d probably make a Bakewell tart or a pear tarte tatin. Pastry is a wonderful vehicle for lots of things . Perfect for carrying about.

All you need is a couple of pots of good custard or some whipped chantilly cream so no need for freezers.

I see your Nigellla brownies and raise you to Nigel Slater’s brownie recipe. Perfect every time.

Actually I’ve just remembered that I’m often asked by DD to make a pecan and chocolate chunk pie. My recipe was originally a Hummingbird Bakery one which I adapted slightly. It’s so rich it doesn’t need anything with it.

Another vote for summer pudding. I have a recipe for making it with brioche bread in a bread loaf tin so all you would need to do is turn it onto a plate, then people can add cream/custard/ice cream if it suits them and I keep back any surplus juice from the fruit which is good for dairy free requirements.

Key lime pie always seems to go down well.

Hollyhead · 19/05/2023 14:19

Tartar au citron always a nice summer hit!

Ooh, I like Nigel. I'll try his next time. I'll be back to find you if they don't work, mind!
