Meat and two veg

In the food sense of the term, ha!

Does anyone still have traditional meat, potato and two veg dinners frequently, like a few times a week?

I much prefer rice based meals; curries, chillis, spicy Mexican stuff etc but it’s just something my partner mentioned earlier. He would like to have been around in the fifties (lighthearted!) I’m thinking it might not be a terrible idea to do this more often so that my vegetable-hating kids build their tolerance (I can but hope).

Sort of. A couple of times a week we have a variation of it, so sausages/mash/veg. Or pork chops, potato salad and veg. That kind of thing.

BrutusMcDogface · 17/05/2023 19:25

Thank you! I could easily do sausage, mash and veg one night and meat (maybe roast chicken) and veg another night, then more exotic things in between!

Oh I have a whole heap of ideas if you want them 😂
chicken Kiev with wedges and veg
fish cakes with wedges and veg
pie and mash night (big success here) with veg
gammon, egg and chips with peas

Lcb123 · 17/05/2023 19:28

Have a roast maybe once a fortnight but otherwise no. Often have roast salmon with veg though

BrutusMcDogface · 17/05/2023 19:29

My family are fish haters including myself which is a shame as it’s so healthy.

A lot of people in the North East where I live still eat 'dinners' or meals like mince and dumplings a couple of times a week, even in summer.

Ooh yes, I need all the ideas! 😂

Pie is a really good shout. Dp loves it 👍

I hail from the north east! My mum still calls it a “dinner”! Chicken dinner etc 😊

Quite often in the mix

You can also do kind of the same thing by bunging chicken/lamb veg and potatoes into the oven. Traybakes rock.

I don’t think the 50s would have worked for him though - veg boiled to f etc

BrutusMcDogface · 17/05/2023 19:34

I need to get the hang of traybakes. Seems like a really easy way to cook!

Does fish, dauphinoise potatoes and 2 veg count?

We also can have stuffed peppers (couscous) and veg...

Or a savoury oat cake (more a fish fingers/ cake replacement) and veg

If they count them yep ...

Whichwhatnow · 17/05/2023 19:39

Not a massive fan of 'plain' potatoes like mash, boiled potatoes or chips but will regularly have meat (steak, chicken kiev, fish fillets, pork loin etc etc usually with some form of marinade or spicy flavouring) and veg/salad with eg spicy wedges, new potatoes in herby garlic butter and jacket potatoes. Also have a roast semi regularly. Otherwise like you I tend to go for stuff like curry, fajitas, chilli, stir fry and so on cos I like flavour and heat!

Whichwhatnow · 17/05/2023 19:46

Second tray bakes too! For dinner last night I had a tray bake with pork loin stuffed with chopped sundried tomatoes, olives and feta with roasted (shop bought pre-prepared) Mediterranean veg and roast mini potatoes, with loads of garlic, chilli, herbs etc chucked in. Was lovely, quick and easy to make and very flavourful! Meat and two veg doesn't need to mean boring 😀

BrutusMcDogface · 17/05/2023 19:46

Thanks for the replies! I bloody love a dauphinois potato but have never tried cooking it! Any good recipes?!

@BrutusMcDogface I just use the slicer for very thin potatoes (I use baking as they are bigger), butter a baking dish rub some garlic into it and layer the potatoes.

Then poor over a mix of full fat milk & thick cream in equal parts (= best seasoned with salt, pepper and nutmeg) sprinkle with grated cheese and bake for 30-40 minutes at 200°C = depends on the thickness of the potatoes!

Enjoy with just a leavy salad or with meat and 2 veg 😁

BrutusMcDogface · 17/05/2023 20:03

Omg that sounds delicious and calorific! 😁

You could try these for a less calorific dauphinois alternative

Going to be accused of being a bot if I post this website again but oh well!
Sausage and mash pie on here, and the chicken and bacon one. You can click the menu and search by ingredient

My dad adored this one (he's a meat and veg fan!)

We do versions of meat and 3 veg fairly often. Not least because it's quite a quick way to cook and often something everyone will eat and as DD is fussy, we need to work to limit her UHP foods. Sometimes we swap out the veg for salads. I often recommend it on here as a way to get a simple meal on the table quickly.

So for example in the last week or two/next week or two we've had/will have:

Cod fillets with new potatoes and steamed veg
Steak with new potatoes and salad
Chicken tray bake with new potatoes and steamed veg
Lamb chops (although we jazzed up the veg and made them chargrilled with a sesame dressing and had them with small jacket potatoes)
Oven baked salmon with rice and a stir fry (does that count?)

I also do a roast chicken fairly often which we don't eat as a full roast so it's just some veggies or salad on the side.

BrutusMcDogface · 18/05/2023 21:26

@SpaceOP that sounds exactly what we need, to reduce the UHP food intake 😬

@Ylvamoon guess what I’m making on Saturday?! 😜

My teens like spicy food but ds in particular also likes meat and 2 veg type meals (well, maybe not the veg tbh)

Toad in the hole
Cottage pie
Roasts
Pork chops and mash
