How to cook jersey royals

I’m pretty sure I’ve asked this before but can’t find on the search. I don’t generally eat potatoes, usually rice but like jersey royals. Do I start potatoes with cold water and bring to boil or add to boiling water? Do I add salt and at what stage? How long to cook for (I know depends a bit on size).

I prefer to steam small potatoes. Less likely to end up soggy .

Try roasting them or cooking them in the air fryer - utterly delicious!

I use cold water and bring it to boil, then simmer until cooked. I don’t add salt to anything other than chips, so can’t help there.

I use cold water, no salt, because I add salted butter to them after. Buttered Jersey Royals are amazing.

I don't time the boil but do a knife test to check for softness.

Unfortunately I don’t have a steamer or suitable set up over a pan just now, but will bear in mind.

I find starting with boiling or bringing to the boil makes little difference. Add a good pinch of salt and ideally a spring of fresh mint to the water.

Steam rather than boil

But if you do boil them, dont actually boil them, just a gentle simmer, I found out the hard way that boiling means they adopt a bitterness which ruins the flavour

Potatoes in a pan and boil a full kettle. Once booked pour over the potatoes and season (sprinkle) with plenty of salt. Bring to the boil and reduce slightly but keeping them over a moderate heat for around 20-25 minutes. Test with a fork or knife pushing into the potato and it should be soft. Turn off, drain and eat.

No salt. Pour boiling water over them and simmer for 10-15 minutes.

Went well, putting them into boiling water then simmer to cooked. I’m unusual I don’t like butter on potatoes including jackets. Maybe roast them next time. Thanks all. Need to save this for next year!

I love this time of year when all the good things😋 are just coming into season . I love raw peas , asparagus and Jersey Royals .

Put them in a bowl, cover with cling film punch hole in cling film and microwave for 5 mins ( for one potion, or two small portions). When done add some butter and chopped chives. Delicious

To add to the previous comments- I cut in half any potatoes which are much larger than the others. Put into cold water, no salt, and simmer until just tender.

They can be eaten like this or drained, then using a folk or masher, lightly crush/squish. I then put onto a metal baking tray and either add garlic powder, onion powder or spring onions and a sprinkle of olive oil or butter, then bake till the edges are crispy but the insides still soft.
