Snacks for babies

Hello

I’ve got a 1 year old and we spend a lot of time out and about at the park or soft play.

I’ve ended up spending loads on buying dinner out for him but would love some ideas of easy snacks to make in bulk that are cheap and healthy!

He’s not a picky eater but I don't want foods that make loads of mess, just something quick and easy before we get in the car to go home :)

Thankyou

When we have sausages for tea, I sometimes do a few extra as they’re great for chopping up for a filling and healthy snack.
Ditto if we’re having carrots, I’ll steam a few extra for a cheap, healthy no-mess snack.
Cubes of cheese aren’t messy, and if you buy a whole block they work out quite cheap as your LO doesn’t need many.
Sandwiches are cheap too.

I've just found this quick and easy weaning recipe:

Falafel - a great idea for your baby's first tastes.

Cheese and crackers or oatcakes, yoghurt pouches, oat & fruit bars of some variety, cocktail sausages and/or sausage rolls, sandwiches, pasta salad.

Home made scotch pancakes or banana pancakes. They freeze really well and defrost quickly.

I also make carrot cake with a bit less sugar than the recipe and cut into squares (or bake in cupcake cases) and freeze.

I’ve tried savoury muffins and frittata too but DS wasn’t a fan.

@Fivemoreminutes1 Can you please tell me what brand of sausages are healthy? I'd like to buy them.
Even Sainsbo premium 93% meat are heavy on fat & salt, plus a range of chemicals that I'd prefer to do without.

@Georgyporky I buy my sausages from my local butcher. I don’t profess that they’re as healthy as giving a child fresh fruit and veg, but it’s all relative isn’t it? In comparison to biscuits, cereal bars, crisps and suchlike, they’re the preferable option as they’re filling, low sugar and provide high levels of Vitamin B-12 and Iron.

I used to cook up loads of broccoli, cauliflower, corn on the cob or carrots when making it for dinner and would keep the leftovers in the fridge. DD loved snacking on it when out and about. Have a great picture of her gnawing on a cold cooked corn on the cob in an Asda trolley seat, looking like a crazed little cave child.

The what mummy makes book is fab for bulk freezer snacks. Our faves our

courgette pinwheels
apple pinwheels
cheese twists
spinach and sweet corn muffins
egg and cheese muffins
savoury flap jacks

i also make pita pizza (Tom purée and cheese and any veg I have in on a pitta bread) and chop into fingers to take out.
similarly, fingers of pita with peanut butter or avo or hummus or grilled with cheese on

ditto to the cooked veg or sliced cucumber/peppers etc. also have a bag of little mini breadsticks in my bag always

Tbh I just go with a banana. Healthy, filling, zero effort and it’s fine tomorrow if it didn’t get eaten today.

I used to always have quiche, sweet potato chips (chop up sweet potato, toss in oil and then roast for 20 mins) and sweetcorn fritters (blitz a small tin of sweetcorn, an egg and a tablespoon of flour, then fry in small splodges) in the fridge that we'd take everywhere.

I prefer giving my kids something readily available in kitchen for snacks. Store-bought packaged snacks are big no for me.

  1. My baby loves fruits. He eats 1 serving of Fruit snack every day. He eats almost all fruits without fuss.
  2. Dairy - Evening Snack is mostly Dairy based.
I offer him other items like dry fruits, crackers, Eggs as per his availability & his interest.
