Child friendly oily fish recipes?

Cherryann · 09/05/2023 20:20

I read that we should be eating one portion of oily fish a week. Can anyone recommend any child friendly oily fish recipes? Preferably suitable for time limited weekday suppers!

(I actually loathe fish - particularly the smell -but am thinking will have to grin & bear preparing it for kids.)

Thank you!

Poached salmon with lemon (cook with a slice of lemon and the lid on and extractor doesn’t smell) serve with mash.

I used to make pasta with pasta sauce and a can of sardines (in tomato sauce) stirred in for my son. I was surprised that he would happily eat it but he would. Made it for similar reasons to you oily fish/calcium in the bones.

Oh those are good ideas! Thank you! My boys would be delighted to have smoked salmon, whether my budget can sustain it of course is different matter……😬

Mine have always liked kedgeree from a young age, which you can make with smoked mackerel instead of smoked haddock. Pasta with salmon in easy creamy sauce (garlic and herb cream cheese thinned with milk), pasta with jar of sauce and tinned tuna or mackerel chucked in.

Tinned mackerel mashed up with salad cream on toast.

Buy smoked salmon trimmings as they are about £3/kg cheaper than slices. A 120g pack (around £2.50) is enough for pasta for for 3-4 people.
I boil pasta with spinach, drain in colander, melt cream cheese or roulé in the pan, add the salmon, pasta and spinach back in and serve. Ifcthey hate spinach use peas.

Sardines, mashed with a splash of tomato ketchup, on toast.

Sardines on pizza, slice them length ways, add to homemade or shop made pizza before cooking.

Mixed fish chowder, add some salmon or trout to your usual white and smoked haddock mix. The same goes for fish pie.

Fishcakes...I don't use a recipe ...just get some skinless, boneless salmon, fresh and cooked, or tinned. Flake and mix with some mash/crushed cooked potatoes, lemon zest, an egg to bind, anything else you like, spring onions, herbs etc. Shape into patties and fry or dip in egg and breadcrumbs before frying. Kids love anything in breadcrumbs!

Salmon in a creamy/cheesy pasta
The 'what mummy makes' recipe book has a nice cheesy orzo recipe which would be nice to add salmon with

Smoked mackerel, mashed with cream cheese, lemon juice and spring onions to make pate, serve in baked sweet potatoes with salad.
Dd still loves it and she's 21 now.

Tinned sardines in tomato sauce stirred through pasta with cooked broccoli or asparagus, or even peas, capers are great on this if your kids will eat them.
