Not sure I like the sound of Delia's new book, it seems to be going against the trend

I am bit amazed at all her recommendations, they are so specific, does any one else think she might not be totally unbiased? Most supermarkets are covered.
I admit I haven't read it, but there have been so many articles out about it, I feel as if I had.
Does any one else have any pithy thoughts on this?

which one? the cheats one?

Carmenere · 17/02/2008 16:49

Sponsorship.

Overrun · 17/02/2008 16:52

Yes the Cheats one, very strange. I think Sponsorship just about covers it Carmenere She recommends Aunt Bessies roast pots, and I had these at a non cooking friends house the other month. DISGUSTING I tell you.
They have loads of money and live in a vast house, but on our way home, dh said to me, "Im so glad we don't we are not them" purely on the basis of the pots

I had a quick look in the bookshop the other day and put it down in disgust. Looks like she has a deal with McCains to me.

nailpolish · 17/02/2008 16:58

i had a quick flick this mornign in the bookshop

it looked ok but then iread a bit where she ws going on about buying ready chopped vegetables - for those who dont have time to chop

wtf?

i put it down

i think i even had a disgusted look on my face

chopping veg takes seconds fgs

hunkermunker · 17/02/2008 16:59

If she wants us to believe she eats the stuff she's recommending in there...

I think it's her retirement tour book.

nailpolish · 17/02/2008 17:00

she should be ashamed of herself

its like that carol vodreman doing the telly ads for farmfoods

she has shot herself in the foot - who on earth is going to believe her books about detox diets now??????

Overrun · 17/02/2008 17:01

I think she has seriously misread the situation. Just when people are caring a bit more about where their food is sourced, and cooking seasonally (I know its a minority but even so).
There was an article in today paper, and the author was making a Shepherds pie with tinned mince fgs
This journalist also made the point, that with the delia effect she could make such a difference in encouraging people to eat better.

Hunker you are so right, but this will probably destroy her reputation, so all in all a bad idea.
Nailpolish, I agree, Shame on her

OP posts:
ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 17/02/2008 17:03

tinned mince? please tell me there is no such thing

hunkermunker · 17/02/2008 17:04

I reckon it'll do quite well.

Her target audience aren't MNers.

Or they are, but they're the ones who go, "Oh, ffs, everything in moderation, you twats" on threads

nailpolish · 17/02/2008 17:05

but hunker isnt it best to try to encourage yourslef to eat proper food? and telling people its ok to not chop your own fruit and veg is just daft

surely she doesnt really think that herself

Overrun · 17/02/2008 17:06

But if you are not into cooking, why not just get a ready made meal, it would probably be cheaper than buying all the stuff she recommends and no less unhealthy.
Mnetters would always have been her target audience before.

OP posts:
nailpolish · 17/02/2008 17:09

ready meals are terrible

full of salt, preservatives and other shit

if you are in a hurry have a poached egg on toast or beans in a jacket potato ffs

I totally agree Nailpolish, and I'm sure it has been said before, but it really doesn't take any time to chop up some veg fgs
I wonder if any one on here, will really like the book?

OP posts:
TsarChasm · 17/02/2008 17:13

If you make a shepherds pie with ready made mash and tinned mince you might as well buy a ready made frozen one and really save yourself any effort? Or ring for a takeaway.

I don't get this new book at all - I want to get it because I like ole' Delia and I like the concept of faster good food. I bought Nigella's book, but this doesn't make sense to me. There's only so far you can subdivide the effort involved in cooking.

And yes specifying brands must mean sponsorship.

Fubsy · 17/02/2008 17:18

I flicked through it yesterday and was quite shocked - it was like Delia with dementia.

Why do i need to know that something from tescos is the best? On what basis? How much is she getting from the suppliers FGS!

TBH there wasnt even a recipe I liked the look of.

I know everyone took the piss out of the Nigella book, but at least she didnt tell you what brand of stuff to buy, in spite of her obvioulsy hab]ving a penchant for Waitrose.

I take it the TV series isnt going to be on BBC?

DontCallMeBaby · 17/02/2008 17:19

According to Amazon though, her first 'How To Cheat at Cooking' was published in 1971. I wonder how they compare?!

Someone on Amazon really likes it, someone who likes to throw 'a handful of rice into a tin of soup to make a risotto'.

, great big poncey

coggy · 17/02/2008 17:19

The food may be faster to make because of all the quick/ half prepared items she recommends but if you follow any of her recipes then shopping would take FOREVER.
The recipes have items from most of the major supermarkets and, as said before, are very specific.

It would be far, far quicker to make from scratch rather than spending hours and hours trying to find these unusual things in six different places IMO!!!!!!

A good idea gone sadly wrong, very wrong!

Overrun · 17/02/2008 17:22

I agree Coggy, who shops from all four major supermarkets silmutaneously?
I guess her first book fitted its time, but I would like to think that people are a bit more interested in cooking (well those who pay cookery books) now.

I have always liked Delia, just can't get my head round why she thought this was a good idea.

OP posts:
hunkermunker · 17/02/2008 17:23

I think she's gone mad, actually.

Naily, yes, of course it's better to chop stuff yourself.

I have No Time At All and still manage to peel and chop veg.

Delia, you've gone mental.

Overrun · 17/02/2008 17:23

Fusby lol "like Delia with dementia"

OP posts:
NAB3wishesfor2008 · 17/02/2008 17:28

Apparently she has had no sponsorship.

It is meant to be the best seller of all time - once it gets going.

Fubsy · 17/02/2008 17:29

Tis true! I was disappointed that they didnt have any £8 copies left in Asda (bet she doesnt source any of her infgredfients there ) so i checked out Tesco, now Im glad - I wont be bothering to get this, same as I didnt bother to get any of the last lot of books that were just compendiums of previous recipes.

Its a shame, i used to love her books.
