Does anyone know of a good strawberry milk-shake mix? (natural flavouring rather than artificial)

DS really likes pink milk. So far I have been using Clipper milkshake powder which is organic and uses natural flavouring. I find that it's too sweet for -my- ds' taste and I would rather use something which is just strawberry and add my own sugar if it needs to be sweetened.

I know that I could buy frozen berries and blitz them together with the milk, but I would rather have the easy option of just stirring something in.

TIA

Rock does a summer fruit cordial - but that might be too sweet (& it might not mix with milk)

Does he need the flavour - could ou just use food colouring?

bran · 16/02/2008 22:27

I he quite likes the flavour. But he's a strange child who doesn't like sweet things that much (except chocolate).

ooh I have never seen clipper stuff.
we use the max for milk by ovaltine. sainsburys have stopped selling it but can still get it in tesco.
i don't think it has anything too crap in it (don't usually buy stuff that does)

They do strawberry flavouring but I'm fairly sure it's never been near a strawberry

What about tinned strawberries in juice

You could just use a hand blended in the glass

fingerwoman · 16/02/2008 22:29

and actually, thiniking back, i believe the tesco own brand one didn't have anything manky in it either.

Maybe I should just buy some Innocent strawberry smoothie. I could probably freeze it into cubes and just stir it into milk. I'm not sure it would be concentrated enough though.

Wouldn't the Tesco own brand have sugar in it? Most of the milkshake mixes seem to.

buy frozen fruit, blend and keep in fridge - add a spoonful to each glass. should keep a week or so.

FWIW DS2 is picky about milky drinks but he does like Sainsburys own strawberry milk - pink stuff in plastic bottle, stored with the milky milk.

It is flavoured with actual strawberry IIRC - the only drawback for me is that it's a bit thick (has carrageenan or something in it)

chocolatespiders · 16/02/2008 22:37

suppose you just have to try it to see how sweet it is

my dc's love strawberry milkshake must buy some more actually

WendyWeber · 16/02/2008 22:43

Just for you bran, I have fetched the bottle from the fridge to give you the ingredients:

whole milk 92%
sugar
skimmed milk powder
concentrated strawberry juice
stabilisers: carrageenan, xanthan gum
natura; strawberry flavouring
colour: beetroot red

it has 10.9g of sugar per 100ml. It's not terribly sweet, and has a nice strawberryish smell and flavour, but if I drink any I have to dilute it with some ordinary milk.

I might try Waitrose strawberry milk (I don't have a convenient Sainsburys) and cut it with plain milk. He only has a cup of it every second day or so though and I fart like a well-used woopie cushion if I drink cow's milk, so I don't think we'd manage to drink it before it went off.

In the summertime Waitrose do a really delicious English-strawberry milk in 500ml containers which is unsweetened, but they don't do it year-round.

Maybe you could freeze it, in cup-sized portions, in tupperware? Ours doesn't say it's freezable, but whole milk generally is - might be worth a try.

Or else force him to drink a cup every day

bran · 16/02/2008 23:06

WW - enough about him. I also like the Clipper mix but find it too sweet, but I only drink goat's milk so I can't have ready-made flavoured milk.

I will have to try the whizzed-up frozen fruit route I think. [resigned emoticon]

Sorry, that was tad ungrateful. Thanks for all your suggestions.

Ohhhhhhhhh - have just now spotted the not quite struck out MY in your OP

Now I get it!

Cows' milk no good then. I will keep a look out for something nice to stir into goats'

bran · 17/02/2008 19:46

Thanks WW. I'll practise my strike-outs for future use.

I have some raspberries in the freezer so I will give whizzing up raspberries with milk a go tomorrow.

We have the Clipper one and just reduce the amount we put in ,still tastes nice and far less sweet.
