Novynu · 22/04/2023 10:33

Looking for very cheap meal ideas. I do eat meat but meat is probably out of budget.

I have around £11 per week for one persons food for the next 5 weeks.

So far I have spaghetti and sauce
Cous cous with a few vegetables thrown in
Batch cook salad to eat over few days lunch

TIA ☺️

Also breakfast I have porridge with water and some of the jam. Asda own porridge is like 70p for a bag. Asda essentials brand is great.

Major cheap meal is Asda essentials spaghetti, chopped tomatoes and that's it. Just a tomato pasta, cheese on top of you can afford it but I don't think it's needed. Can throw in frozen spinach if you have it which can be used with all previous meals

Soups are actually expensive to make. If you compare it to a basic meal. And tins of soups are expensive seeing as it won't fill you up for long

They’re not - they’ve always been a peasant staple - minestrone, cassoulet etc.

VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji · 22/04/2023 11:46

I’ve done a big lentil chilli before that’s lasted a week.
have with rice a couple of nights, jackets a few nights, bag of cheap nachos to jazz it up.
that was good.

I’ve also stretched a reduced beef or lamb joint into a weeks meals. But you have to be lucky to get one.

Willmafrockfit · 22/04/2023 11:47

dont forget the bottom shelf, where the cheaper brands are

If you look up some of the ww soups they are fast and cheap to make. Add toast and it will fill you up as much as a sandwich would.

It isn’t really manageable. I do often have to go hungry sometimes but that just is what it is with being very poor like I am. I’m not looking for sympathy or anything as I am used to my reality but it is my reality all the same. I just keep pushing through ☺️

Sorry to hear that. It's not sustainable or good for you if it's often.

You've had some great suggestions. Try Olio, contact food banks (there's no shame in that). I don't want to pry about finances, but perhaps people here could help with suggestions there.

Willmafrockfit · 22/04/2023 11:50

if its just you it will be ok op
freeze bread
tesco basics
vegetarian

harrissa · 22/04/2023 11:52

But short term lean weeks people seem to stock up on rice, porridge, bread. Batch cook (slow cooker possibly) a large stew, soups etc that will stretch over a few meals.

Boobahs · 22/04/2023 11:53

Definitely download the Olio app. Lots of food on there that could help you out x

Mammyloveswine · 22/04/2023 11:54

Ah op I think you can do it but it'll be tough..

This is what I would do:

Lentil and bacon soup: do a big pot and fave for lunches, will cost about £2 (use the leftover bacon chopped up to go in a pasta sauce).

Cheap pasta with cheap sauce (49p pasta and 40p jar sauce)-add the leftover chopped bacon fried with onion to give it more depth and flavour.

Eggs are good for protein. 6 eggs are about £1.50 so egg and soldiers (with the cheapest loaf) would be £2. That's a fiver so far.

Id then get 4 baking potatoes (they are 23p each in aldi) and get some beans (37p a tin).

Porridge oats too for breakfasts.

Then last bit on a bag of frozen veg or see what shops have the best "super 6" in terms of fresh fruit abs veg as you may be able to get some fresh stuff!

Def get on the olio app too op!

@Novynu

This is the crux of the matter.

Is this unusually low for you to have £11 a week, for 5 weeks.... in which case, posters can help you with that.

Or

Is it the norm to have £11 a week, continuously for food. In which case, it's your finances that need picking through, not your food options.

Chewbecca · 22/04/2023 11:55

Take a look at Jack Monroe's website - loads of free, costed, low cost recipes that are also nutritious if you have the time / effort available.

I wouldn't recommend the instant noodles, they are much more expensive than the pasta equivalent.

Dollmeup · 22/04/2023 11:55

Frozen fruit bags are good. Tesco do a imperfect one that is big and cheaper. Would be good for adding to porridge or as a pudding if you want something sweet but also healthy.

I'm a big fan of red lentils and rice too.

Whatdayisitalexa · 22/04/2023 11:55

Liver casserole? Liver is very cheap. onions bacon stock cube, very nutritious, freeze portions for another week

Therunecaster · 22/04/2023 11:57

Whereabouts are you x

eliza10 · 22/04/2023 11:57

The following site might be worth a visit: https://cookingonabootstrap.com/

some really good low cost recipe ideas!

Look for the packs of 'cooking bacon' in the supermarket. It's the bacon offcuts/ends. Big pack under a pound. Pick through till you find one with bigger pieces. Usually have 2 or 3 decent sized bacon steaks plus odd rashers. Protein and flavour very cheaply.

Wazzzzzuuuuuuup · 22/04/2023 12:00

Cheap meals could include

I've just done an asda basket for £11.63. You could probably do this cheaper if you had an aldi or lidl nearby

Pasta shapes 41p
Long grain rice 48p
Italian passata 50p
Tomato puree 60p
Garlic 39p
Essentials wholemeal loaf x2 78p
1l milk £1
Curry powder 80p
Potatoes 2.5kg £1.25
Chickpeas 45p
6 eggs £1.45
Tuna in brine 55p
10 essentials Fishfinger 75p
2 x tins baked beans 54p
Essentials onions 55p
1kg mixed veg 72p
Jam 40p

With the above I would make
Jacket potatoes (micro if energy costs are an issue) with beans, or tuna or leftover curry x 3 meals
Potato and chickpea curry with rice x 2 meals
Scrambled eggs on toast or omelette with onions and potatoes x 2 meals
Tuna pasta (penne, froz veg, tin tomatoes, tin tuna, Tom puree) will stretch to 3 meals
Beans on toast x 2
Potato and veg soup, flavour with curry powder, salt and pepper x 3 meals
Fishfinger sandwich x2
Fishfingers mash and frozen veg x 2
Fried rice with onions, garlic, frozen veg x 2 meals
Jam on toast as required or could make a bit of rice pudding with some leftover rice, milk and jam

That would do 21 meals for a week, not exciting, not great for long term nutrition but doable for a few weeks.

Other cheap meals I would make are
Chili made with kidney beans, onion, garlic, paprika, chili powder and a squiry of tomato puree
Lentil curry
28p noodles with added froz veg or tomatoes and onions

I agree with others if you have £55 now you could take advantage of bulk buying ingredients which would be cheaper in the long run. People have mentioned too good to go and olio which can be great but can be a bit of a mystery bag.

Hope this is helpful. You have had some good advice on this thread.

Tryingtokeepcalmandcarryon · 22/04/2023 12:01

In sainsburys or Aldi / similar baked beans (you can get a tin for approx 25p), instant noodles, cereal (eg cheap shreddies approx 95p, cheap weetabix), toast, x6 apples 95p, rice, frozen peas, eggs (x12 £1.50), tinned spaghetti hoops, jacket potato, big block of cheese £3 ish, pasta and tin of chopped tomatoes 25p plus herbs, peas. Sainsburys do nice but VERY cheap frozen ready meals, macaroni cheese for 90p, lasagne 90p etc

If you currently work, could you take any annual leave to pick up a few days seasonal work and boost your income, stuff like exam invigilation for GCSE/a-levels?

TheIsleOfTheLost · 22/04/2023 12:07

Porridge is a cheap option. I don't find it fills me up for long though, so cheapest peanut butter on cheapest wholemeal bread is another breakfast option. If the cost of cooking fuel is an issue then go for tinned beans over dried, as they just need reheating. You can get mixed beans in chilli sauce for 90p in tesco, so that is a good meal base. Cheaper proteins that add flavour so you don't need as much include things like chorizo, lardons, black pudding, mackerel and kippers. Onion, rice, frozen peas, smoked fish and curry powder in a pan makes a nice quick kedgeree. Mixed size eggs will be cheaper than medium or large ones.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 22/04/2023 12:09

I don’t know your circumstances/caring responsibilities but a few cash in hand jobs or those online research things, even if it’s £5 here or there, would make a difference.

Breakfast-
1kg porridge oats
Basics jam
£1.20 and will cover a week or more

Lunch/dinner
Instant noodles (the cheapest I know are Ko-lee brand, 25p a pack at Sainsbury’s)
Baked beans
Spaghetti hoops (16p a tin at Sainsbury’s)
1kg bags of frozen mixed veg
Pasta with chopped tomatoes or a basic pasta sauce
Cheddar
Milk
Tea / coffee
Basic biscuits x2 a week

Something like a basic dhal would do too, depending on what you have in already.

Communicate with the food bank/pantry and explain your situation. I run a food bank; in your circumstances i’d be reimbursing your bus fare or sending a delivery to you.

Quveas · 22/04/2023 12:10

A sausage stew. Some stock, a couple of bags of mixed frozen veg (these can be picked up for less than £1 in many supermarkets), some diced potatoes . onions, mixed herbs and cheap sausages. Brown the sausages in a pan first and then throw everything in a big pan! You can get at least 6/8 meals out of that - and if you have a freezer it freezes portions well so you can mix up having some on different weeks.

ShowUs · 22/04/2023 12:14

Potatoes, potatoes, potatoes!!

They are cheap, filling and really good for you.

You can have them mashed, boiled, roasted, chips, wedges, fried, baked etc.
