It's not soup. It's not stew. It's not curry.

We quite often have something for supper but I'm not really sure what it would be called. It's not a real recipe, I just make it up, but it bugs me every time that when dp asks what we're having I have to say "Oh, um, a bowl of that sort of made-up stew-y soupy veggie thing I do".

It's basically any veggies I have left over from the veggie box plus a pulse of some sort and a tin of tomatoes, cooked on the hob, reduced and often (but not always) a bit spicy.

Tonight's example:
Fry off an onion and a couple of leeks.
Add a few mushrooms.
Tin of tomatoes.
Some sliced carrots, a tin of chick peas and some water.
Flavour.
Simmer down.
Serve in bowls with chunky bread. Eat with a fork or a spoon.

What would you call it?

gruel?

flamingtoaster · 15/02/2008 19:36

I would call it vegetable stew - that's what we call ours!

DontCallMeBaby · 15/02/2008 19:44

Hoosh. It's NOT hoosh (which was a revolting sounding concoction much beloved by polar explorers) but it rather fits the spirit of putting together a meal consisting of whatever you have to hand.

I trust you're unlikely to put penguin in yours though.

BroccoliSpears · 15/02/2008 19:54

But when we have stew it's different. It's stew. And dumplings.

lol @ gruel.

Isn't casserole done in the oven, not on the top?

Anyway, I'm going to call it 'Hoosh' from now on. What a brilliant word.

Although maybe 'hoosh' would be better suited for one of those desparate meals you make from whatever is in the freezer? We call that Siberian Take-away.

I like sturry and stoup too .

Now I can have conversations that go

Him: What's for supper?
Me: Hoosh
Him: Eh?
Me: A bowl of that sort of made-up stew-y soupy veggie thing I do .

Repeat until end of time.

Here in Spain we would call that 'potaje'. Any kind of soupy stewy thing with pulses is a 'potaje'. So maybe translate that to pottage? Sounds warming and filling whatever it is
