help cooking rice

The thermostat that controls heat on my hot plates doesn't work so the only setting is full on .I can't simmer.

With this in mind can anyone advise on how to cook rice .Do different kinds of rice require a slightly different approach ?

I've just splashed out and bought some lack venus rice and I'm ridiculously excited at the prospect of serving it with butternut squash curry .But I don't want to end up with a soggy clump.

I can only cook rice in a rice cooker. A little one for three people is £16 on Amazon.

Verassata · 18/04/2023 12:16

I microwave mine in a Sistema rice bowl. Double the amount of water to rice, we use a mug to measure, 750w for 15 minutes, comes out perfect every time although I only cook long grain or basmati.

Or get a rice cooker. Ds is at uni with lots of international students, they all use a rice cooker.

Nookable · 18/04/2023 12:17

Buy a rice cooker. I spent ages thinking about whether to get one because was worried I wouldn't use it enough to justify it. In the end someone bought me one as a gift and I love it, I find that I eat way more rice now than I used to because of how easy it is to use.

If you can only do a full boil, then I’d probably cook rice like pasta (boiling in an excess of water and draining afterwards). But black rice is very forgiving. I made a black rice congee and the recipe suggested 1.5-2 hours to get the rice to fully break down, and even at that point it still had some bite to it (compared to a white rice congee).

I just use my rice cooker though. I tell it if it’s long grain, short grain or brown rice and it does the rest. It’s one of my favourite appliances.

Redebs · 18/04/2023 12:20

Boil it, then put the lid on and turn the hotplate off while the water is absorbed.

rileynexttime · 18/04/2023 12:22

I think you're all correct - a rice cooker .Is there a compact one ? There's normally 3 of us .

Amazon have got this for £7.99
Sistema Microwave Rice Cooker | 2.6 L | Dishwasher Safe Small Rice Cooker | BPA-Free | Red

Bring the rice to a boil for a few minutes, less than 5. Take off the heat (completely not just turning the ring off), but do not remove the lid, no need to stir. Leave alone for about 15 mins. It should come out great.

Sunshineclouds11 · 18/04/2023 12:24

I also boil and put a lid on and leave it

CorvusPurpureus · 18/04/2023 12:37

My cooker is similarly binary!

1 mug of rice & 2 of boiling water in a saucepan with a clear glass lid. Stick on heat.

After 6 minutes, check - by 7 minutes the water should be absorbed - you'll see little steam holes as if it had been poked with a pencil.

Move the pan off the heat - lid stays on. It'll finish steaming & fluffing up whilst you heat through the curry or whatever. Give the rice at least another 7 minutes off the heat, but it'll sit there quite contentedly for half an hour or so.

Or yes, a rice cooker. Mine broke & I haven't got round to replacing it because method above works fine, though.

rileynexttime · 18/04/2023 14:30

@CorvusPurpureus solidarity !

So when you say "stick on the heat" you mean a rapid boil?

I use a microwave rice cooker by Joseph Joseph.
Don't know how I managed without it !

KittyMcKitty · 18/04/2023 18:51

Add basmati to boiling water, boil for 10
mins and strain - perfect rice and much better then if you try to do absorption. I only use absorption for sushi rice.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 18/04/2023 18:53

I cook a batch in a rice cooker and freeze in portions in IKEA bags.

KittyMcKitty · 18/04/2023 18:54

Oh and after straining if need to keep it warm for a while just leave it in sieve with a lid on.

CindersAgain · 18/04/2023 18:56

I think the one you mentioned is now £3.99. We have it - it’s plenty big.

Buy a rice cooker. The normal size is fine for anything from 2-6 people I believe. We usually do 2 cups and that serves 2 adults and 2 toddlers. I do a third cup if both DS and DH want rice or if it seems like people might want leftovers.

Leftover rice can be frozen and heated up in the microwave as long as you don't leave it sitting around. That is helpful for when you want a single portion later.

rileynexttime · 18/04/2023 19:49

Ok ,I've ordered that Sistema one .Though that link takes me to the £7.99 .

Foolproof rice.

Buy rice.

Use measuring cup and put rice into sieve over rice cooker bowl.

Rinse rice 3 times and let drip whilst faffing around with other things.

Put rice into bowl, add water to the marker line in the bowl.

Put rice bowl into rice cooker, select appropriate setting (long or shortgrain rice), press Start.

Walk away until rice is cooked.

gogohmm · 18/04/2023 20:04

Rice cooker or multi cooker with rice setting is the way to go, mine is a 12 in 1 pressure cooker

stillherenow · 18/04/2023 20:05

I use microwave rice now as there’s only me and dd so it’s much easier - perfect rice (only tilda)

@proudmommy28 - that's a helpful guide to different times for different types of rice .
I can't lower the temp on my hot plates but I've just bought a microwave pot for rice which I think will help when I get used to it .
My first attempt was with black rice and it took about an hour ,which I definitely wasn't expecting .
I'm not sure if I'll cook that type again as I think the fibre content was way too much for my stomach.
But I might try soaking it overnight .

One part rice two parts water. Bring to boil with the lid on and turn heat off. Leave for about 20 minutes without takng the lid off- works every time 😊

rileynexttime · 28/04/2023 09:44

@DeLaLune2022 what sort of heat source ?Gas ,electric?
My hot plates retain a lot of heat after they've been switched off ,I'm sure much more than gas or induction .
