for the ds's. Ds 2 had one mouthful and then spat it out and went 'yeuch!'
Ds1 humoured me by eating a bit of it and pretending to enjoy it and when I asked him later on if he enjoyed his tea he started nodding his head and then he said 'no'
Dh wouldn't have any of it when he came in, but it was ok with a bit of tiger bread.
It did look like gruel though.

I use half lentils and half mince. Maybe that'd convince them.

Cremolafoam · 15/02/2008 13:26

dont use red lentils use the green ones. they dont taste dry and lentilly.
green ones stay whole if you dont cook it too long red ones go mushy

I would choose lentil bolognese over meat any time!

It's not like supermarket bought minced beef tastes nice (to me anyway!) so both are all about the flavours you add, which are the same.

The texture of lentils can be a bit much for some people - a good thing to do is blend half of your bolognese.

lazarou · 15/02/2008 13:27

I used the green ones. Maybe a curry would be more successful. Maybe it was the texture. They have never had them before.

I too tend to use green or brown lentils

gingerninja · 15/02/2008 13:29

use the red ones for curry and you can make a dahll (sp?)

lottymadbird · 15/02/2008 13:30

try some grated carrot and lots of small chopped up veg in there too, healthy and not so overwhelming as all lentils.

OrmIrian · 15/02/2008 13:31

Definitly use the bigger lentils.

Personally I don't like the texture of lentils with pasta. But they make a lovely chilli.

OrmIrian · 15/02/2008 13:32

If you are looking for a meat-free pasta sauce, a simple tomato sauce with basil is good.

Dotsie · 15/02/2008 13:33

I've got a lovely recipe for lentil bolognese sauce using red lentils, grated carrots and celery. I could email it to you if you'd like to try it. It's always gone down well in my house.

lazarou · 15/02/2008 13:35

I tried to mix it in with some pasta but they still noticed the lentils. Ds1 picked one up and said 'what are these?'
I tried my usual trick of 'they are lovely and Tommy Zoom eats them' which did work, but he wasn't enthusiastic.

I just wanted to experiment with lentils really, to see if they would eat them. The results were: No, they won't, well, the youngest won't, the eldest will, at least, give them a chance.
Give lentils a chance, I like that.

How odd, I did this yesterday too. I've put it in a lasagne tho, which I am now rather dreading.
But mine was half and half, and I did also chuck a whole load of extra mushrooms in there to moisten. And wine.. lots of wine.

lazarou · 15/02/2008 13:42

Yours sounds nice. Mine was a bit bish bash bosh because I didnt have any onions or peppers, garlic cloves etc. Good god, that sounds awful doesn't it? No wonder they didn't like it. A big pan of rancid puke for tea anyone?

have emailed you the recipe. Hope it goes well.

MrsMattie · 15/02/2008 14:18

Lentil bolognese sounds absolutely revolting, sorry!

Miggsie · 15/02/2008 14:18

My daughter hates pulses, it's the texture.
I use soya mince, she can't tell the difference!

lazarou · 15/02/2008 14:24

Soya might be better, but I find it a bit bloating. Might try it for a bolognese rather than lentils next time.
Thanks Dot.

I often put a couple of handfulls in my usual bolognase. Also made a veggie lasange the other day with lentils that was very scrummy, think it contained carrots, courgettes, mushrooms, green lentils, kohl rabi (random I know but it was knocking around) and a tin of tomatoes. Def agree that while with mince the longer you leave it simmering the better it gets but that with lentils you don't want to leave it too long else it turns to mush.

milkmoustache · 15/02/2008 18:08

a spoonful of pesto hides a multitude of sins too!
