Bits in my porridge

Im eating porridge for breakfasts at the moment, I might need to do this for a few months, its not my usual breakfast, I prefer protein but need to eat this for the fibre and other reasons at present

Luckily we had a pot of rolled oats, I dont know what brand they were when we bought them, but my god they're annoying. Every now and then I get a hard bit of husk (I think thats what it is), which ruins everything, out of a tablespoon of porridge this morning for example there were 4 bits of something hard like husk or something like that that I had to pick out

Does this happen in all rolled oats or did we buy some horrible stuff at the time? I dont think I can spot them before they're cooked or is there a way of getting these bits out? I do them as overnight oats and then each morning heat the individual portion up in the microwave

I’m a porridge connoisseur and we currently eat Flahavan’s organic porridge oats. Haven’t encountered husk bits.

Ive seen that brand, I think its for the connoisseur!

I think I might need to invest if Im going to eat this for some time to come

When you add the liquid to the oats, give it a good stir and the husks will rise to the top where you can easily pick them out. Repeat two or three times, to free up any that were lodged further down. Should catch most/all of them. I don't get why having a bit of husk ruins everything though? It's more of an annoyance than a disaster.

Rolled oats are better for you as they are less processed hence the husks. Try Pps method above but if they doesn't work for you just try a different type of oats. Redybreak is completely smooth or you could try adding other crunchy things to it like sunflower or pumpkin seeds and then you won't notice.

Its just a turn of phrase!

But in all seriousness I do hate 'bits' in things it makes me a bit retchy. Same if I find a bit of shell in egg or shell in prawns when Im eating,, I cant finish it and have to chuck the rest.

But I will try this when I make my next batch.

I don't think it is that in the porridge I've been eating quaker 2 minute oats for about 5 years and it's only the last year maybe year & half, that these inedible rubbery bits have started turning up in the porridge and my friend said the same thing and she's been eating it longer, but she's so fed up with it and worried incase it's something toxic their putting in it to make it seem thicker, that's she's going to have some sent off to be analysed, there's no reason what so ever to have this in it ,it's tasteless ,inedible, and Very annoying, because they've put more & more of in the sachets everytime I seem to buy it, because I buy it in bulk.

I buy Tesco's Scottish rolled oats and haven't had any hard bits of husk. I add liquid and microwave for 90 seconds. Nice smooth porridge. Definitely no rubbery bits.

Only I add sultanas to mine. 😊
