I would normally boil it for 10 mins. NO idea if that's the same length of time if you steam. Sorry!

ClareVoiant · 14/02/2008 18:12

should i have boiled it....oh rats

I would steam over water on the hob for about 15 mins (or until it is soft when you spike it with a knife).

PeaceandLovebaby · 14/02/2008 18:15

steaming is good. keeps all the sweet yumminess in.

takes a wee bit longer than boiling, which also works.

if microwaving, makes sure theres a teeny bit of water in the bottom of the tub, and a lid on... this creates steam to cook it. tho, it takes way longer than youd expect for a micro, so not rteally much point.

best to steam or boil imo.

[now has craving for cornonthecob]

Yes, you can definitely overcook it.

I usually boil mine for 8 minutes.

ClareVoiant · 14/02/2008 18:27

thanks all will leave it steaming away, its still hard... ho hum...

ds has just had scrambled egg instead as its getting late...

can the corn be reheated. i.e. can he have it for lunch tomorrow?

when I microwave mine, I only put it in for about 3 mins! (prob under cooked tho!) and with a tiny bit of water.

def sounds overcooked if its hard.

ClareVoiant · 14/02/2008 18:29

ooo... science teacher, does it get harder if you overcook it?

ClareVoiant · 14/02/2008 18:30

oh balls... i think ive overcooked it.... shame really as they were organic ones too

OP posts:
ratbunny · 14/02/2008 18:31

not scienceteacher (but ironically kind of am one..) yes, def goes hard if overcooked.

donnie · 14/02/2008 18:42

boiling is easiest, then smother in butter and black ppepper ( am salivating!)

ScienceTeacher · 14/02/2008 18:45

Yes, it goes hard if you overcook it. It sort of shrivels up, so definitely looks different from undercooked.

ClareVoiant · 14/02/2008 19:34

will know next time just to boil it and for 10 mins else will go hard again....

thanks all.... will try agin at some point... shame as i really fancy it now...

I am guessing your cob would have not been brilliant whatever you did to it. It is not the season for corn on the cob - they are late summer veg. So wherever it came from it has had to be transported which takes time and gives it a chance to dry out.

Corn on the cob is best eaten straight after picking - because the sugars start turning to starch as soon as it is picked.
