Tasty Bacon

Hottoffeesauce · 11/04/2023 11:14

School holidays so just cooked my son some bacon and eggs. Cut most of the fat off the bacon but left a little. The bacon was so 'blah'. I always find this with bacon nowadays so I had bought some pricey back, unsmoked from Waitrose this time and spent more than I usually would and it was still tasteless. Can anyone suggest some really tasty bacon please? I think I have had really tasty bacon once in my lifetime, in a hotel in Norfolk about 15 years ago!

Go to a butcher rather than a supermarket.

The taste comes from it being smoked. That's it. No point getting expensive bacon get cheap stuff but make sure it's smoked, simple!

FancyFran · 11/04/2023 11:31

Tesco smoked is good ditto aldi medallions (no waste).
Marks tastes too green for me.

whoami24601 · 11/04/2023 11:49

The cheap looking aldi rashers are amazing! Think they're £4 for a big pack but some of the rashers are so thick they're almost steaks!

Magenta82 · 11/04/2023 14:57

The flavour comes from fat and smoke. If you cut the fat off or buy unsmoked bacon it will be a bit underwhelming.

Smoked Streaky bacon I'd the way forward, the tesco finest stuff is good, no added water so it cooks well and you don't get the horrible white film left when the water comes out.

Mossstitch · 11/04/2023 14:59

Has to be dry cured, more flavour and none of the nasty white juice coming out. For more flavour better to cook with fat on then cut off as that's where the flavour is.

Smoked streaky is the tastiest bacon. If you can afford it, buy the Finest/Irresistible range. It isn't pumped with water so it tastes better. I think it may actually be less expensive than it seems anyway, once the water has bubbled off the cheap stuff! I keep meaning to weigh it after cooking and see whether it is!

We buy 1.4kg at a time from the local butcher.

It's locally reared, dry cure. Lovely thick slices and tastes amazing. Works out at about £8.86 per kg

I've just checked and for tesco Finest Best Britsh dry cure bacon (8 rashers) which I think would be the closest equivalent in quality its £14.58 per kg

Sainsburys Taste The difference British dry cure bacon is £13.64 per kg.

Supermarkets are ripping everyone off for often poorer quality food. Go to your local butcher and see how they compare £/kg to supermarket bacon. Even if its a similar price the quality is likely to be vastly superior.

pastabest · 11/04/2023 16:18

Apologies the butchers bacon is £11 per/kg not £8.86. Picked up the wrong packet to have a look!

Still cheaper than the supermarkets though for better quality!

EggyBreads · 11/04/2023 17:12

Smoked streaky. Cooked until it's crispy.

Georgyporky · 11/04/2023 17:49

Leave the fat on for a start, fat=flavour.

Knullrufs · 11/04/2023 17:50

Butcher. Supermarket bacon is like someone grilled a handbag.

Hottoffeesauce · 12/04/2023 08:29

Thank you all. The bacon I bought was dry cure and no nasty white nitrates oozed out when cooked. I don't like the taste of smoked bacon as I find the 'smokiness' overwhelming. I realise the fat gives taste so leave some on but not all as I don't want to have to cook it for too long to render the fat and make the bacon too crispy. I will try a couple of local butchers and see how that goes. Thank you everyone.

I'm struggling to find decent smoked bacon atm.

Yellowdays · 12/04/2023 22:26

Definitely go to a butcher.

OMGitsnotgood · 12/04/2023 22:49

Bacon from a good butchers is usually more expensive but worth every penny. I'd rather have quality less often.
