i have been eating a lot of porridge with fruit but need some variety

Am unsure about shop bought museli as it is usually high in sugar ...

Are eggs ok? I always get confused about whether eggs are "good" for you

My usual breakfast is 2 poached eggs. Tasty and satisfying and full of goodness. Advice used to be to restrict the number of eggs you ate, but apparently this is no longer true.

They do contain fat, but they also have lots of other good nutrients, including Omega 3 (especially if you buy organic).

As an alternative to porridge they're probably worth trying!

do you need to add yoghurt to a smoothie or can you just whizz up loads of fruit?

Muesli is a shocker. I bought some for a healthy breakfast recently. It was 250 cals for a few mouthfuls and had about 4g of saturated fat! No added sugar either!
I second eggs- they seem to fill me up.
I also quite enjoy baked beans or mushrooms on toast which is said to fill you up for a while as the beans are slow release. You can get low salt/ sugar ones.

You can add protein powder to breakfast smoothie... I have it sometimes and it does keep me full until lunchtime...

You can make your own muesli to ensure that there are no hidden nasties in it. Or I love home made granola which does have fat and sugar in it but you can control the amount if you make it yourself iyswim

tbh smoothies arent as good as we are told. it takes loads of fruit to make a decent sized glass and then it only counts as one portion of fruit and plus it ends up with quite a lot of calories.

Maybe some natural yoghurt with some fruit and granary toast??

I have just ordinary oats with skimmed milk and an apple grated into it. (I'm on a New Year Health thing). If there are any other bits of fruit lying around then they get chopped over the top as well. I don't have a particularly sweet tooth, but you could have some maple syrup over the top.

At first I thought it would be , but it is really (that's me opening my mouth for more!) My 4 year old DD loves it as well.

This morning I had a pink grapefruit and a handful of mixed seeds. It was lovely and actually kep me going until breaktime pretty well. Tomorrow I'm going to have natural yoghurt, mixed with seeds and raspberries - this is more filling because of the bit of fat in the yoghurt I think.

Grate a big ripe tomato and add olive oil, salt, pepper, oregano and a tiny bit of garlic powder. Spoon onto toast.

That's what we have in Spain, it's quick and delicious.

Plain yogurt with pureed fruit or pureed dried fruit that you soaked in water overnight.
Make your own muesli.

you can poach eggs in the microwave. takes less than a minute. shredded wheat with yoghurt on is nice. you could also have scrambled or boiled or even an omelette.

i also like pancakes with fruit, bagels and crumpets but not sure if they are "good" for you.

Two slices of wholemeal toast sandwiched with a scrape of peanut butter and half a mashed banana. Filling and yummy!

Toasted rye bread with:

  • cold meats
  • cottage cheese
  • tomato and olive oil as per shitemum's recipe - yummy-
  • Avocado salmon
  • hummus and sliced cucumber
  • with olives
  • yogurt and fruit and seeds
  • buckweat pancakes with smuckers sugar free jam (dead easy/make on sunday and keep in freezer and heat in toaster)
  • leftover vegetable soup and crackers

I tend to eat lots of non breakfast foods - savoury - I don't want to put you off with my favorite miso soup & tofu morning mix. But you get the gist. Think out of the box...if you can stomach it of course. The options are endless.

How do you poach eggs in the microwave? I've tried those plastic holders, (both in the pan and the MW) and the egg just seems to WELD onto them. can't get them clean ever again. I love poached eggs, but I so so hate washing up. Dishwasher doesn't get them clean either.

I think I need to put butter in the holders, but rather defeats the healthy breakfast theory doesn't it? Will just have to use the other sort of grease (elbow)

How about a home made Swiss museli? Got this idea from Hugh FW I think.
Make a dry museli mix with oats, seeds, nuts, dried fruit (whatever you like). Store in big jar. Ten minutes before you want to eat it, grate an apple and pour the juice of one orange over your portion, leave to soak. Eat with yoghurt if you want, or more orange juice if you don't want the yoghurt. Yummy.
