Strong decaf coffee, preferably not instant

Is there such a thing, Coffee seems so insipid lately or it might be my taste buds

We have a dulce gusto machine but the de caf pods for that seem quite weak. Ive tried the barista type containers for instant coffee, again a bit weak. Im now drinking a rombouts coffee filter one, very weak, but it was all we could find in the supermarket the other day.

I'd rather not use the cafetiere due to the faff.

What about a drip filter cone? Doesn't take up much space in the cupboard.
I use the Lidl/Aldi home brand decaf ground, which has a good flavour.

I have a proper espresso machine and use Illy Decaff Beans they're amazing. I also use 4 shots for a mug Grin. Does Illy do anything for your machine??

Otherwise can you change your machine to use less water per pod and double up?

The Nespresso decaf capsules are surprisingly good. I have their pixie machine.

SallySunrise · 25/03/2023 07:29

Aldi decaff filter coffee is surprisingly good. I use a over cup dripper thing. You just pop a filter in with the coffee and pour boiling water over. Doesn't take much longer than instant.

I didnt know about these dripper things, interesting and could be my solution. How do you know what size to get, they all have sizes?

Or a stove top one which will make espresso strength? See the ones by bialetti. They make the best coffee IMHO

picklemewalnuts · 25/03/2023 07:51

It's about how many mugs you make.
So put the cone on your mug, put a filter paper in, then a heaped spoon of coffee per mug. Drizzle boiled water around the grounds for a few seconds to moisten the grounds, then pour the rest of the water in.

It trickles through as coffee. You soon get good as estimating how much water and coffee to use.

The pre moistening is optional, really!

WeCome1 · 25/03/2023 07:52

The one cup size is v60 so just look for that. The filters are also numbered.

I know you said not instant but have you tried Nescafe Azzero Decaf? I faffed around for months trying different decaf ground coffee for my espresso machine and was disapponted every time but very happy with Azzero.

Orcubed · 25/03/2023 07:55

I use decaf beans from Clifton coffee company. The roast and post decaf Columbian beans are also goo. Think they both sell them as ground coffee too.

ilovemyslippers · 25/03/2023 07:56

Lavazza do excellent decaf beans and ground coffee. You could just use a normal coffee pot (the one with a plunger), to make the ground coffee.

tortiecat · 25/03/2023 07:57

I quite like these

roycroppersshopper · 25/03/2023 08:00

I used Café Nero decaf ground coffee in a stove top coffee pot. Highly recommend the Café Nero ground coffee.

Igmum · 25/03/2023 13:52

Bellac this is loads better than traditional coffee filters because you don't need filter paper SwissGold Coffee Filter - one cup, reusable - KF300 amzn.eu/d/8tzyA47. I bought one about 6 years ago and it's still going strong. For decaf ground I would recommend Manumit Coffee Roasters www.manumitcoffee.co.uk/ - they deliver and their decaf is lovely. My back-up is Taylor's.

I second Lavazza. I use my Italian style Moka coffee pot but there are other options. Really delicious, strong decaff.

hugoagogo · 25/03/2023 13:57

I use lavazza ground de caf in my aeropress. It makes great strong but not bitter coffee.

Kerfuffler · 25/03/2023 13:58

Aeropress + 2 scoops of m&s Colombian decaf does for me.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 25/03/2023 14:00

San Franscico Bay decaf. Comes both as ground coffee or whole bean. Available direct from their website or from Amazon.

Diplidocus4 · 25/03/2023 14:09

Taylor coffee bags - individual sachets of coffee bags and I'm sure they do a decaf

bellac11 · 25/03/2023 14:13

To answer some questions as I dont know how to do quotes in a line-

Yes I tried azzero and found it a bit lack lustre

I would be making a mug at a time, around 250ml I think my mug is

I didnt want to use a coffee pot/cafetiere really, these little drip things seem like they could be the solution

At work they have these Mozzo coffee bags, the de caf one is quite nice but I cant seem to buy them as a domestic customer, dont know if anyone else knows of this brand. Ive tried Taylors and found them unbearably weak.

I buy pact in fine grind for our espresso machine. I wonder if you can get refillable pods for your pod machine?

picklemewalnuts · 25/03/2023 17:28

I find Taylor's really weak too. You'll do better with the Aldi/Lidl house one. It's a blue packet and ridiculously cheap.

You can get those drip cones really cheaply, if you get plastic. So it's well worth a punt.

If you want fuss free, don't bother with refillable pods or a stove top Mocha pot. They are far more fuss than a cafetière.

The cone is the way to go.

picklemewalnuts · 25/03/2023 17:30

This. The size will be fine- if you want more, put more coffee in and pour more water through.
