Is Coronation Chicken having a revival? Or will there be a 2023 Coronation Quorn? Coronation Quinoa??

I'm not even in the UK, I'm in Ireland so I didn't expect to walk in to Supervalu earlier and see ''chicken coronation'' on display! Something old but new to my family. (They ate it). It made me think, here was a dish that was invented for the last coronation I suppose! Was it? I never thought about it before today. It is not the height of haute cuisine but it has survived 70 odd years.

But when you think of how familiar the average person was with curry 70 years ago it makes sense, it's like a very basic entry level curry flavour for the British palate, which 70 years ago was not as accustomed to a good hot curry.

I wonder if there'll be a dish invented for this coronation that will still be around in 70 years? Are they working on this ?

I've wondered if a dish will be created for the coronation and I hope they do. I'm no monarchist, but I do like food. If I reeder rightly coronation chicken was created as nod to the commonwealth nations who were seeming to want to reduce their ties with Britain. Thinking about the world at the moment and Charles' interests a plant based dish using ingredients which can be grown sustainably in Britain feels appropriate, though I'll admit that's vague.

We still had rationing at the Queens coronation.

GracePooleslaugh · 18/03/2023 21:43

Mmm now I want coronation chicken

A fake steak would be great. Coronation plantake. With a good sauce.

its not fashionable to admit but I love coronation chicken 🤣

OdeToBarney · 19/03/2023 18:27

I had coronation chicken sandwiches today 🤣

PlateBilledDuckyPerson · 19/03/2023 18:29

I don't think it's ever been totally out of fashion in the UK - it's consistently been a sandwich filling option for as long as I can remember.

I haven't heard any noises about a dish for Charles's big day. The 'Platinum Pudding' for his late mum was a huge disappointment IMO and I haven't heard anything of it since the Jubilee.

I expect any dish endorsed by Charles would be organic this and sustainably farmed that ...

I have Coronation chicken with cold pasta - tis lovely

PlateBilledDuckyPerson · 19/03/2023 18:50

It's also ace in a jacket potato.

RockingAmadeus · 19/03/2023 18:59

I had it today with a baked potato, delicious

I made proper coronation chicken for the jubilee last year, and it was absolutely lush so I'm looking forward to making it again this year for our community party -which is a joy to behold as there is So Much Food and the tables are literally groaning.

metro.co.uk/2023/02/07/forget-coronation-chicken-official-recipes-for-king-charles-revealed-18238650

Apparently the official dishes are:

Ken Hom’s Coronation Roast Rack of Lamb with Asian-style Marinade

Nadiya’s Coronation Aubergine recipe

Adam Handling's strawberry and ginger trifle

They don't quite have the simple, classic appeal of Coronation Chicken IMO

I think rhubarb and ginger trifle would have been a better combination.

But I can't see any of them having the longevity of Coronation Chicken.

This is our favourite - it is divine

Coronation aubergine 😅
I'd prefer that to lamb though. Not a fan.

I agree that rhubarb and ginger sounds interesting, but strawberry and ginger?? I feel like the ginger would need to be so so subtle or it would spoil the strawberry flavour.

But interesting there are some dishes lined up. In 70 years maybe strawberry and ginger will be like em... ham and pineapple!

I do too. And Coronation Turkey always puts in an appearance after Christmas

I doubt if coronation chicken was viewed as simple or classic in 1953, so give it time 🙂

Perhaps not classic, but simple - the list of ingredients for that lamb dish is huge.

I'd like the Royals to eat a bit of humble pie, just for a change.

DuckyShincracker · 22/03/2023 14:35

I love it and we always have coronation turkey at Christmas, family favourite!
