ooh what about buying a pack of In The Night Garden figures and putting them on?

I have a 2 year old and she loves ITNG.

Just noticed the present one has the recipe next to it too - bonus!!

MrsBadger · 11/02/2008 22:03

round white-iced cake
outline a big 2 in pink sweets
fill in with more sweets
done

save your effort for when she's 7 and demanding a princess barbie pony ballet cake

MrsBadger · 11/02/2008 22:04

oh and candles

anything else will be wasted on 2yos

gigglewitch · 11/02/2008 22:06

anything pink...
have you seen that barbie-doll thing where you make a barbie legless and put it on top of a pudding-basin cake? the cake is the skirt, which you put sticky pink icing on, and it looks like barbie has a ball gown.
Haven't tried that tbh, but my friend did recently, looked quite effective.
My latest decorating 'fad' is using white roll-on icing, cutting hearts or stars out of it, and replacing the cut-outs with coloured icing shapes made with the same cutter so you get this fancy 'inlaid' effect, IYSWIM?

muffinmum · 11/02/2008 22:06

thank you!i didnt want to go ott but was unsure if being a bit tired! thank you thank you all.loving the ITNG figures idea

Make a big sponge cake, Ice it in coloured butter cream, buy sweets (choc buttons, jelly sweets etc) and let the kids ice it before they eat it!

stealthsquiggle · 11/02/2008 22:12

See my profile for Little Miss Muffet?

(and for the record when you get to the Barbie stage then if you don't want traumatised small girl you cut a hole in the cake and leave Barbie's legs attached (albeit wrapped in clingfilm!))

PrincessPeaHead · 11/02/2008 22:15

I've just done a fantastic Peppa Pig cake for my dd's 2nd birthday. I copied one I found on the internet and it looked fab and she squealed and clapped when she saw it (ahhhh)
This is the one I did but if you scroll down a bit there is also a good one here which is easier

SoupDragon · 11/02/2008 22:17

BabyDragon's 2nd birthday cake was a pile of chocolate iced chocolate cupcakes with sprinkles. She had chocolate all round her mouth, up her nose, in her ears... I think she liked it.

stealthsquiggle · 11/02/2008 22:19

OK so when I say Little Miss Muffet I mean Little Bo Peep - spiders, sheep, who cares?

muffinmum · 11/02/2008 22:37

princesspeahead that is amazing!

muffinmum · 11/02/2008 22:40

stealthsquiggle i am suitably humbled and hoping that my friend is not a MNer otherwise she will be disappointed when she sees mine!!!

muffin I must clarify that the first link is the cake I copied, not the cake I did, although the cake I did came out just like that because actually it is very easy!

It was the most successful cake I've done in terms of effort expended v delight registered by small child though...

stealthsquiggle · 11/02/2008 22:44

honestly it takes patience rather than skill!

You have to decide who you are doing it for, though - Little Bo Peep got lots of oohs and aaahs from parents and grandparents, but 99% of 2yo girls would probably be much more impressed with Peppa Pig!

muffinmum · 11/02/2008 22:45

just looked at the others on that link and am quite inspired for when i have to do my dd in a month, she is huge charlie and lola fan and that one looked v.easy.my friends dds cake is for wed afternoon and i am working all day tomorrow and then a course after work til 10pm so am going to go with cut out hearts for her but feeling excited about my dds.thanks for pic links and also inspiration!

it is a bit like playing with playdough really.
my dd doesn't really watch any tv or anything (not interested) but she does have a peppa pig playset which she loves, so that's why I chose it. It was either that or a dog (she loves dogs) but when I saw that cake...

yes you are right stealthsquiggle, the grannies had no idea who peppa pig was. I had to get out the playset and say "look! look! isn't it good!" to get the praise I felt was my due

PrincessPeaHead · 11/02/2008 22:48

muffin there are some really good cake books you can buy dead cheaply in those sort of outlet book depot places, I find they are good to look through for ideas and also for reassurance that actually it isn't difficult to ice a cake at all!
anyway good luck with it

ChirpyGirl · 11/02/2008 22:59

Have a look on my profile for a cake I made for a joint 2 year old party.
Plain sponge cake, covered in bought froasting (bought as I only know how to make it with raw egg!) died with green food colouring, chocolate letters and zoo animals from DD's littel people noah's ark.
10 minutes decorating, lots of impressive noises from other parents! I made a ring cake as it sliced up nice and easily as well for putting in bags...

ChirpyGirl · 11/02/2008 23:00

Would work really well with ITNG figures or any character toys as well. DD and her friend have different favourites so I went for neutral!
