Quesadillas?

Are they as simple as just putting a load of grated cheese/salsa between two tortillas, then popping in a frypan?

was wondering whether I could try it on ds (9m)...

well that's how we do it...

lljkk · 11/02/2008 21:40

We do them under the grill, low heat, just enough to melt the cheese but not to make the tortilla too stiff to fold over.
Would imagine most 9 month olds can't hack salsa, mind.

Carmenere · 11/02/2008 21:41

Yep they are that easy. Put a whole tortilla onto a pan, cover it with grated cheese, sprinkle bits of ham and tomato and peppers over it. Place another on top and turn them over to cook the other side. Tip out onto a plate and cut into slices.

theyoungvisiter · 11/02/2008 21:43

I do it with cheese and bits of veg (onion, tomato, whatever I've got lying around). Very tasty.

I wouldn't give to a 9 mo though - tortillas are EXTREMELY salty - weight for weight they are probably more salty than crisps. I don't have a packet to hand but I think they can be nearly a gram of salt per tortilla depending on the size of the tortilla.

Add the cheese and the salsa to that (both quite salty) and I'd say too salty for a baby under 1 year.

wow, okay thanks

and thanks for warning TYV - I've thrown the packet but will check tomorrow at Tesco

OP posts:
PhDlifeNeedsaNewLife · 11/02/2008 21:49

ooh turns out no we didn't throw the pack

but it doesn't say anything about salt content - only lists salt way down on ingredients.

hmm...

I just had a look on the internet - an Old El Paso brand soft flour tortilla contains 300mg sodium per tortilla, which is equivalent to 0.75g of salt.

So 2 x tortillas with (say) 30g of cheddar would give you a salt content of about 2 grams, which is 1/3 of the adult daily allowance and well over the baby allowance.

yup, quite sure. Bread and stuff is amazingly salty (an average slice of bread has between 1 and 1.5g of salt). It needs the salt otherwise it tastes sweet.

If you want to check, this is the website of the company that makes Old El Paso tortillas Click on Old El Paso Flour tortillas for Burritos and the nutritional info comes up. (Old El Paso aren't particularly salty btw, they were jsut the first brand name I coudl remember)

1 serving gives 300mg sodium (1 serving is classed as 1 single tortilla). To convert sodium to salt you multiply by 2.5.

whew, scary!

I've got OEP corn ones (rather than flour) - funny they're not listed

OP posts:
theyoungvisiter · 11/02/2008 22:09

I think corn ones are slightly less salty - but I wouldn't want to swear to it. Odd they aren't on teh website - maybe they're under some disguised heading! I think this is the US website so maybe they have some other name in the states.

Having said that I'm sure your DS wouldn't eat the whole thing (unless he's a lot better eater than mine ever was!) so it's probably nothing to stress about. But people tend to worry a lot about crisps and not notice the salt in things like bread and baked beans and stuff.

If you wanted to do something similar but less salty you could use pancakes (which are more or less salt free) filled with cheddar, or tortillas spread with cream cheese (which is much less salty than cheddar).

PhDlifeNeedsaNewLife · 11/02/2008 22:21

yeah I'm only just starting to get my head around this

was stressing the other day that he was eating lots of stuff I think of as 'nutrient free' - cheesy bread, weetbix, pasta w/ baked beans (tesco homebrand ones quite low salt), ummm can't remember what else - it just seemed kinda empty to me.

then I figured, I guess that's kind of what he needs atm. maybe? still getting most of his nutrition from me.

I should probably mooch over to aitch's blog and ask there

oh and he's 10m, not 9

Yum, my DHs fav meal. I use chopped chicken breasts and onion with salt & pepper as well as the cheese, once crispy cut into quarters and spread with sour cream & salsa, not all that healthy but soooo delicious.
A twist on this is the pizzadillas which is tomato paste spread on the tortillas with cheese and/or any other ingredients and some oregano inside, put together like a sandwich, lightly toast each side in a dry frying pan until the cheese melts and yum, really quick and nice.
