What to do with mixed lentil pack

hedwigismyowl · 12/03/2023 18:18

I've been given a pack of mixed lentils by my DM as they were in a birthday hamper.

I've never cooked with them before.

What in earth do I do with them?

Daal!

MandyMotherOfBrian · 12/03/2023 18:22

Or a mushroom and sage lentil risotto

Vegetarian here - anything that you would put mince in, use lentils instead! Spag bol, lasagne and chilli are great with lentils

I think if you warm them up with a dollop of crème fraiche and a handful of chopped fresh herbs, they work well as a side dish.

Lentil ragu

Here’s the recipe realfood.tesco.com/recipes/lentil-ragu-with-spaghetti.html

@MandyMotherOfBrian do you have a link or a recipe for this please?

MandyMotherOfBrian · 13/03/2023 09:51

I normally just wing it but this recipe looks easy enough. Probably have to adjust timings depending on the lentils though

Pouch of cooked lentils or packet of mixed uncooked lentils?

I love lentils. Great in a salad or mixed with rice or other grain.

I'd make a bit pot of daal. I love a good daal though!

Laffinalltheway · 17/03/2023 11:58

Soak them in tap water overnight. I start them off with hot water and just leave it to cool.
Put in saucepan, cover with twice as much boiling water, add a stock cube (whatever you prefer, veg, chicken, beef), a couple of bay leaves and one of those bouquet garni Tea bags if you've got any. Bring to the boil, then cover and simmer for about 40 minutes until they're soft but still have a little bite to them. Have as a side with anything, meat, fish, sausages...

I do similar to Laffinaltheway but add some parsley and lemon juice at the end of cooking, tastes lovely with some halloumi and salad.

I always put a mug of dried red lentil in a vegetable soup (if it has red or yellow veg, not in a pale soup eg cauliflower). I put them, or a tin of green lentils in with mince. I keep meaning to try making daal but forget!

Never tried the pouches of cooked lentils but I’m sure they’re lovely.

Sauté garlic, onions, celery, carrot, sweet potatoes and add stock and mix through

mumarooni · 17/03/2023 20:47

Defo different if they are cooked or dry. If dry, dhal or soup are easy ways to use them (for soup just chuck a handful in when you still have 25mins cook left, for dhal choose a simple recipe online as there is a vast range of complexities but simple.ones still yummy. If it's a pouch of cooked lentils, you can stick them in any tomato based thing (pasta sauce etc) or make a salad with whatever you like..go well with feta cucumber mint sun-dried toms and olives.
