Scones mix v recipe

I've never made scones before but am wondering if there is a big difference in using scone mix and making them from scratch. I don't mind making rhe effort if it's worth the different but sometimes the packet mixes can be ok....

I'm more inclined to see it as scones mix v shop bought.

Home made/recipe beats both.

Scones are very easy to make and the only reason I'd use packet is if you don't buy flour or butter in general and surplus would go to waste. I haven't made gluten free ones but the usual scone recipe doesn't involve any chilling or freezing before baking so don't know what sort of recipe that was! Sounds more like a cookie recipe.

The standard ratio is quarter fat to flour so for example 2 ozs butter to 8 ozs flour, self raising or plain with baking powder. I don't add sugar to fruit scones but for plain I add about a tablespoon of sugar, then it's just milk or milk plus egg and just add enough so that it sticks together, add slowly so as not to overdo it, very little handling, pat out flat, don't bother with rolling pin, bound to go too far, you want them thick. Hot oven, cut them high, they wont rise as much as you think.
