Does anyone have any recommendations/recipes for something for me to make for a primary school bake sale? We have been asked to send in homemade cakes next week. What can I do that is not too hard but looks delicious, is child friendly, easy to transport and no nuts? Thanks

Sainsbury’s small chocolate chip cookies (the ones that are often 3 for 2 with the little flapjacks, rocky roads etc).

Put them in your own tin on top of a pretty napkin.

Job done!

My go to is Jamie Oliver brownies always a hit easy to make and absolutely delicious

Anything with a shit tonne of buttercream on top

That's what kids buy!

TheUsualChaos · 10/03/2023 23:33

Butterfly cakes

Fairy cakes always a sell out as long as there's plenty of buttercream
Maltese and marshmallow rocky road
Mini egg blondies always a sell put this time of year

Having helped out at several bake sales, crispie cakes and fairy cakes sell fast.
I usually send in fairy cakes with pre-made icing piped on top, with the brightest sprinkles i can find scattered ontop of that.
Bight cake cases help too.

Chocolate bark - not cake but home made , put a few bars of milk , white , plain chocolate (i use a supermarket basic range which i think is nicer than a lot of bigger brands) onto a baking paper lined tray ,put in a warm oven until melted .
Using a skewer mix the chocolate until the colours make a marbled effect.
Sprinkle on smarties, buttons , popcorn -anything you like , then in the fridge until hard.
Break into shards put in a cellophane bag with a bow, cheapish ,easy and looks lovely.

Rocky road without nuts, it’s chocolatey so kids will always choose it and the marshmallows are an extra treat. Really easy and no bake.

chocolate
golden syrup
butter
biscuit
white chocolate drops
marshmallows

There are always loads of cupcakes and cornflake cakes at ours. Flapjack gets left!

rocky road or tiffin is good or a big tray bake with sweets on top.

Chocolate brownies, cupcakes, rice crispie cakes... All that's been mentioned.
Anything that's in individual servings rather than a big cake that has to be cut up or sold whole, for more money.
I'd always pick homemade over shop bought. Shop bought cakes are horrible!

Are you on Instagram? I follow a woman called 'Scandicook' and I always make her chocolate cake (it calls for things like kefir and sourdough starter discard, but you can just use yogurt and/or milk instead). It's a tray bake, really easy, needs minimal equipment (no creaming of anything - just mixing of wet and dry ingredients), and utterly delicious. I let the DC go to town decorating it with copious amounts of sweets (smarties, etc) and it's always the first thing to sell out at the school bake sales

Flockameanie · 16/03/2023 22:17

and having manned many a bake sale table, the stuff that always gets left is:

  • shop-bought cakes
  • anything 'plain' looking (flapjacks, banana bread, ginger cake)
  • Biscuits

Fudge made with marshmallows.

Tastes great.

Don't get evaporated milk and sweetened condensed milk mixed up - the recipe calls for evaporated milk.

When mine were still at schools that did cake sales, I always made cream cupcakes. You just put cake mix into flat bottom cones, bake, and butter icing on tops for the I cream. Flakes and sauce optional.

I make these, but use shredded coconut instead of shredded wheat.

@Flockameanie at my daughters school it was the opposite - shop bought cakes and donuts were the first things to sell. Homemade was usually the leftovers.

Classic vanilla sponge fairy cakes wifh a vanilla frosting or icing and multi coloured sprinkles are always the best seller in my experience.

Mary Berry's sponge recipe is everything in one bowl, and mix. Minimal time & washing up and they come out lovely and light.

Chocolate dipped marshmallows are always popular. Get the bigger ones. Can be out on a stick or not. Dipped in melted choc then dipped in sprinkles.
Easy to do with veggie marshmallows as well.
