My lidl chicken breasts always smell weird!

We've always cooked them up anyway, and they're in date, but the smell is very nearly enough to put me off.
It seems to be every single time I buy them - has anyone else noticed this?!

Yes they are rank and their whole chickens smell the same, I don't buy meat in lidl the last time I did the smell was so bad I binned the chicken.

UpsideDownInsideOutRoundAndRound · 08/03/2023 20:43

It’s because they preserve them by adding gas.

We won’t buy meat treated like this, prefer less meals with meat rather than compromise.

ibuymeownflowers · 08/03/2023 20:44

Really? I've never had that issue with the thighs. Had some iffy looking bacon once though

Hawkins003 · 08/03/2023 20:44

Perhaps don't sniff them ?

That said aside, I've usually had Morrisons, but normally yellow label

What's yellow label? The reduced ones? I always go for reduced and freeze it

Whatwouldscullydo · 08/03/2023 20:51

Yes..lidl and aldi for that matter too chicken, chicken looks, taste, smells and feels weird. The meat in general is odd tbh. I stopped buying it a.long time ago for this reason

Snippit · 08/03/2023 21:01

I no longer shop in Lidl. The chicken is vile and never lasts, the vegetables and fruit isn’t great either.

I now do an online shop with Asda and they are fabulous. Their own brand baked beans have just been voted ‘best of’ supermarket own brands, they’re lovely, much better than Heinz.

I spend less as I’m not wandering around being lured into all the crap they have on the special offers isle. I’ve not been in my Lidl for a year now and don’t miss it one bit, Asda is pretty competitive.

The chicken breasts from Lidl and Aldi are woody. Because they accelerate the growth of the chicken, the muscles get inflamed and so you get that chewy, hard texture. It's absolutely disgusting.

I've had the same texture from tesco and Sainsbury's, they all use the same supplier.

That's strange I normally buy my chicken in Lidl, as I have found Asda chicken smelly, especially the wings, and the same issue with Sainsburys. I have had 'off' lamb from Lidl and fish too, but in my experience, the chicken is reliable. When I buy the whole chickens, I get the free-range ones. The worst chicken I ever had was a whole one from Morrisons -rank, and Morrisons couldn't care less.

Yes reduced ones, get to sample the more expensive foods for a cheap price

Well, I buy mine from the butcher so wouldn't know! I ventured into the Lidl meat section to try and save money. Never again. We eat chicken once a week now if that.

bluejelly · 09/03/2023 07:22

If you live near a butcher, buy chicken there. Free range, ideally. It definitely tastes and smells better than factory farmed.
(And the treatment of factory chickens is appalling.)

jeffersonsam · 21/03/2023 07:40

I 'm does not buy meat any from the shop Lidl. Due to bad smell.

toastofthetown · 21/03/2023 07:47

All the supermarkets will use the same three of four poultry suppliers, whose processes won’t change (or at least not significantly) between customers. Woody breast isn’t an issue limited to Lidl or the UK, but buying higher welfare chicken will mean you’re very unlikely to encounter it, as it seems not to occur in free range or organic (which are slower growing).

IncessantNameChanger · 21/03/2023 07:53

Unless I est the chicken on the same / next day or freeze it, I it's off. Same with all their meat. Its the same price in Tesco or sainsbury's so its not cheaper and god knows how they store it for it to go off so fast.

MaryJean87 · 21/03/2023 07:56

I don't mind the whole chickens from Lidl and Aldi but the thighs, breasts, drumsticks in packs are disgusting. Pumped full of water, tasteless and greasy, chewy texture.

Plirtle · 21/03/2023 08:22

I've never had off chicken from.lidl, in fact the only place I've had properly off chicken was waitrose!

I'm convinced all these people saying their chicken was off just don't like the smell of packaged chicken!

That's not to say their chicken is nice, it isn't, it's gross - fishy and greasy.

Tiny2018 · 21/03/2023 08:25

I'm Vegetarian but at one point was buying chicken breasts from Lidl for my ex and son.

They always smelled off to me, even though they were in date. I couldn't in good conscience feed them it. At first I thought it was me, but after repeated episodes realised it wasn't and just stopped buying them. They're gross.

They almost certainly weren't off. Off chicken smells so bad it makes you recoil. Packaged chicken smells a bit funky when you open the pack but after 15 mins is fine.

It's been off. The smell is unbelievable. Like a rotting tampon. But 100x stronger

My friend bought m some frozen chicken Kiev's from Lidle, I noticed they said from PL (Poland) wasn't keen due to the antibiotic scare about chicken from Poland, today just out of interest i looked at the same product which niw says DE (Denmark?) On further reading label is says from Germany AND non EU countries??? Obviously didn't buy it, though all Lidle meat was UK red tractor?????

BlackForestCake · 12/08/2023 23:08

DE is for Deutschland i.e. Germany.

I know organic chicken is horrifically expensive. I can't afford it all the time but it does taste much, much better.
