Odd question but I'm about to buy a blender for preparing DD's foods as I'm going to start weaning over xmas, I will be doing mashed potato in it for her so can I do normal mashed potato in it, ie can I blend the butter, milk and potatoes and will it be the same as mashed potatoes. I love mashed potato but hate mashing them?

Can't really use a blender for mashed potatoes - turns them into a gluey, sticky, rubbery mess.

JoolsTide · 06/12/2004 23:42

jo is absolutely right!

Have you tried a ricer? Bit of a faff, but perfect mash and not the 'hard work' of using a masher.

Cinderellascarrieg · 06/12/2004 23:49

uuuurgh NO. I did this & it was utterly disgusting, like wallpaper paste. Ruined a perfectly OK veggie shepherd's pie!

Cinderellascarrieg · 06/12/2004 23:50

Sorry blender that is! Dunno about ricer - I've gone back to using a fork! Wink

FrostyTheSurfMum · 06/12/2004 23:51

I was a blender virgin when I started weaning. Joash is right - it does something weird to the spuds, but I've found it's OK if the spuds are in casseroles or fish pie.

aww I'm gutted

I always get DP to mash them but he gets fed up half way through and we end up with lumpy potatoes!!

Thanks for the reponses

Blender - no. But you can use an old fashioned cake mixer thingy for lovely smooth mash without glueiness. Oh I could just eat it now - real Autumn comfort food!

Ricers are fab. I microwave a potato, cut it in half, put it in the ricer cut sode down, queeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeze and then mix in the butter/milk with a fork.

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 07/12/2004 17:42

squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeze even. Ignoring all the other typos.

KateandtheElves · 07/12/2004 17:43

SantaFio2 · 07/12/2004 18:23

I used a blender for quickness once, never again:o

jane313 · 07/12/2004 18:34

I mash potatoes in my babycook blender. They are the nicest ones I've ever tasted, no lumps at all, not at all gunky. I didn't like the ricer I bought.

TheHollyAndTheTwiglett · 07/12/2004 18:41

NO

TheHollyAndTheTwiglett · 07/12/2004 18:42

well that was a touch redundant wasn't it Grin

kinderbob · 07/12/2004 18:58

As my ds would say "no do it!"

OLittleYurtofBethlehem · 07/12/2004 19:49

I did potatoes for the first time for DS at the weekend and used a hand blender, and added plenty of the cooled boiled water and the spuds turned out fine, but DS didn't like them, the first thing he has turned his nose up at!!!
