Steak 5 days after defrosting?

What it says in the subject line, basically. Took a steak out of the freezer Sunday evening, intended to have it last night but didn't as something cropped up. Due to various logistics it's looking like I won't get around to cooking/eating it till Friday.

Bit unsure as UK advice on the web seems adamant you have to eat food the day after defrosting, whereas US sites seem to say it's fine for 3-5 days.

Advice please? Thanks in advance!

I wouldn't eat it today really, although if it smells ok then likely it's fine! Definitely wouldn't leave it until Friday. If it smells fine, cook it today and freeze until Friday

Cook it now and use it cold in a Thai beef salad on Friday. I wouldn't cook and eat it five days after defrosting....

Depends if you like your steak rare or well done.
Well done ie fully cooked all the way through - likely to be fine Friday. Rare/medium rare- more risky, I’d say eat it today or latest tomorrow.

If all else fails you could chop it up, cook it through and then refreeze to be used in a casserole some day. (Sad but better than binning!)

Pretty sure you'd be able to tell my sight and smell. It would be grey and smell funny surely.
As PP suggests I'd cook it now and have it cold.
Or bin it.

God know if you have ever had true food poisoning you would rather waste a £15 steak than suffer or inflict that.

Re cooking it now and having it cold later - this doesn’t really help if you only cook it rare, as it won’t be enough cooking to kill any bacteria in the middle.

I agree smell and sight will tell you a lot.

Thanks folks. It looked/smelt fine, but I decided not to take any chances. Cooked it earlier, having it for lunch tomorrow (the joys of wfh! 😄)

Cooked it well done, meant to say 😄

Usually the smell and look test is fine with beef and I'd have eaten it (well done) today no problem. Chicken I'm less keen on taking chances with as I've had salmonella from that stuff.

Enjoy.
