Hi, having a bit of a birthday party at home next week, for adults only. Has anyone any suggestions for fab food I can put out as a buffet/help yourself. Hot or cold. I was going to trawl my good food mags, but I thought I'd ask you lot first, and see if you have any fab suggestions and recipes. Thanks...

do you want a meal or just nibbles?

Crystaltipsandalaistar · 10/02/2008 20:45

don't know really. I like cooking, but have never done a larger buffet before. Prob for 20 max. I'm happy to bake in the day, or just roll out usuals like salmon or gammon ham, and bits. Thought it would be nice to have a couple/three nice filling dishes 'I made eariler' and some puds.

I did this yesterday - we had about 25 people round (although some of them were children). I did:

  • a big cheeseboard with bread, oatcakes, crackers, grapes, celery
  • a couple of big bowls of different salads - cous cous, Greek, taboulleh, a green salad
  • various other picky type things including homemade hoummus etc, with crudites, crisps and so on
  • a couple of plates of sarnies

I didn't do any hot stuff but wished I'd done some garlic bread and maybe some little roasted new potatoes or wedges or something.

I did several different kinds of trifle for dessert, with icecream and sweeties for the children.

It seemed to go down well, although we had a fair bit of salad left at the end - nothing else though!

How about a couple of homemade quiches, served hot?

Or (not something I'd do as 'm veggie but...) some spicy chicken wings, or little sausages cooked in honey and mustard or something?

meatballs are nice. also if you can face it make trifle individually in teacups/glasses/whatever
i tried cheese/pineapple thingy and it doesn't work with nice cheese, too crumbly.

shepherds pie & peas

coronation chicken can be made ahead and is fab, tho cold. If hot, would do chilli, lasagne, or a casserole of some sort - beef & beer/lamb and red wine/pork and cider/veg curry.Better still if you have a slow cooker or can borrow a couple, then you can make a couple of stews and they'd be hot and ready to eat without reaheating.
