Most nice stuff was seen as ‘too good to waste on the kids’.
Meat unless a Sunday dinner or in a ready meal, fish from the fish and chip shop (we always had to make do with battered sausage!). Can’t really remember much else now but there was rarely anything to help ourselves to when we got home from school,
sliced meats and cheeses etc were out of bounds. No biscuits or crisps unless the packets were already open. This was in part a financial decision, mum was a single parent for a while although no shortage of money for her girly holidays away or fags and booze 😂 We weren’t really allowed in the kitchen to learn about cooking, she didn’t cook much.
I’ve gone completely the other way with my DC, the youngest has been ordering off the main menu and having main courses of steak/lobster since he was about 7!
They are all really interested in food and cooking now which I love. Meals are a big social event here.
