dh usually eats the out of date stuff in the fridge, should I give him the smoked salmon which I've just noticed is 7 days past its date?

Oh dear get some extra loo roll in then!!!

dolally · 09/02/2008 23:15

... do you think I should bin it then?

He's not too bothered about dates but I suppose with fish it's too risky.

My DH would eat it. In fact he would be appalled if I threw it away without offereng it to him first.

Drusilla · 09/02/2008 23:25

If it hasn't got a smell that you recoil from, I would just let him have it

dolally · 09/02/2008 23:31

Right. I'll do it.

Can't face it myself now I know what date's on it!!

Tell him the date and let him decide, he is an adult,

avenanap · 09/02/2008 23:38

Have you got a spare bucket handy?

dolally · 09/02/2008 23:41

(snigger)

yeah but if I tell him the date, he'll ask me what I think and I'll have to say... I dunno - the mn jury's still out.

Smoking preserves it doessn't it?
And it is vacumm sealed, if he is not too fussy I would prob let him have it.
Don't know that I would touch it, but my dad probably would.
He has a belly of iron, due to eating all the leftovers for years and years. I keep telling DH that that is his job, but nothing doing

avenanap · 09/02/2008 23:49

Fish! Probably not a good idea. Smoking is supposto preserve it though, the supermarkets only have to put dates on stuff because they have to . I'd open it and have a smell. If it smells dodgy then throw it. They stick used by dates on jars of pickled onions. That's stupid!

ALMummy · 10/02/2008 08:54

I probably would not. I do admit to being guilty of the same thing though. I would never give my children out of date food but would quite happy dish it up for DH. Only 1 or 2 days out of date though. Worse still though I would NEVER eat it myself

Cloudhopper · 10/02/2008 09:01

Inspired by the 'freegans' (and dh) I always ignore sell-by dates and eat it unless it actually smells or tastes off. (within reason - had a clear out the other day and threw away stuff with 1999 sell by dates)

I can honestly say I have never been ill from this. I always think of times before sell-by dates existed - what did people do then?

I agree it's his call though.

2sugars · 10/02/2008 09:08

I have a huge confession here. I do let stuff got out of date (dcs fancy something else, H is off watching rugby) and so consequently find myself putting the smallest amount of stuff in the bin by our local bus stop. Before you all jump on me, it's not much.

Anyhow, just after Christmas, when mum and my sister came up, she was waiting at the bus stop to catch the coach back to London, and I got a phone call from mum on her mobile.

2S, you do realise there's someone depending on all that stuff I threw out for you, don't you? He came by on his bike, and I had to help him with the bag you'd tied a knot in.

I just wonder, come the warmer weather, if I could keep it refridgerated for him.

avenanap · 10/02/2008 23:21

Haa. If I see somethings out going out of date I stick it in the freezer.

Dolally, is the husband feeling ok?

dolally · 12/02/2008 20:34

tee hee,2S

well if anybody's still interested, we both had it yesterday....GAD the use by date was the 31st of JANUARY for pete's sake!!!

Anyway, it was vacuum packed, and smelt absolutely fine, but

I must confess I pushed mine around the plate a bit and chucked the remainder in the bin when dh wasn't looking. I had to pretend you see as I had so heartily recommended it was perfectly edible...

No I agree - would never try this trick on the dc's...only on dh.

Haa, I'm almost crying here. I'm pleased he's suffering no after effects. You'll have to try harder next time

Cloudhopper · 29/02/2008 22:09

Did he get ill is the main question though?

tee hee - I'm guessing not, or this thread would have been red hot afterwards...

avenanap · 29/02/2008 22:10

Old thread so I'm assuming he survived. Better luck next time.

expatinscotland · 29/02/2008 22:11

I'd eat it.

I don't go by dates, I go by whiff.

dolally · 29/02/2008 22:15

hi, everybody, yes we're both still here to tell the tale.

Though I haven't bought smoked salmon for a while.

OP posts:
scaryteacher · 29/02/2008 23:32

If it's smoked,it' OK I think.

My MIL doesn't go by sell by dates, but kill by dates. I cleared out a cupboard a couple of years ago, and there were packets from the 70s!
Mind you, it took me 8 years to use a jar of Marmite that was in DHs cupboard when I first moved in with him...
