Breakfast ideas

I need to start eating breakfast (due to meds and because I'm bloody starving by 10am!). I can't keep buying from the canteen at work or I'll be bankrupt. I can't eat straightaway when I get up so have to eat when I get to work.

I've tried the porridge pots. I really want to like porridge but to me it taste like sawdust and glue (whether done with milk or water).

I can't have many fruits (allergies) but I do eat strawberries so something like that is a consideration.

We can't have a toaster at work (h&s) so my usual home breakfast of fruit loaf is out, as is any other toasted product.

We do have a microwave at work.

Any ideas? If I buy at work I always have two poached eggs, cooked whole tomatoes and two hash browns. That keeps me going until lunch time.

keep trying with the porridge? There are so many different flavours, it is quite an acquired taste, but it is much better for you than bread?

how about rice pudding? I have that for breakfast with medication sometimes, half a tin, heated in the microwave. It is quite a normal breakfast in some parts of the world.

breakfast muffins?
all sort of options really; oat, bran, savory

Strawberry, oats and seeds smoothie? Maybe with some yoghurt thrown in. You can prep it night before without blending and keep it in the fridge. Then just whizz before leaving for work.

It isn't much better for you than bread fgs unless you mean sliced white bread.

What about Greek yoghurt or overnight oats or Bircher muesli?

You can also poach eggs in the microwave in a cup with a little water, but I recommend practicing at home as they can leap out of the cup or explode if over heated! You can also buy ready poached eggs which can be heated in the microwave - they are surprisingly good and foolproof as long as you follow the instructions.

I like these breakfast cookies www.tamingtwins.com/easy-breakfast-cookies/

If you google there are lots of other recipes available. Otherwise I like a mix of Greek yoghurt, fruit, a tablespoon of chia seeds and 2 tablespoons of oats. If you make it before you leave home it’s really yummy.
Chia puddings topped with fruit are also healthy.

Bagel topped with cream cheese and smoked salmon?

You can do poached eggs in the microwave. You could also cook some cubed potatoes at home and heat those up (to replace the hash browns) with some tomatoes too.

Does it have to be a hot breakfast?

Egg sandwich. Banana sandwich (if you can eat them), avocado, a scotch egg (if not veggie), a hard boiled egg with some salad leaves and tomato.

Make omelette, slice it up and microwave, put it in a nice roll of choice? With tomato or salad.

Roast a tray of veg, including tomatoes, microwave a portion at work, put in a nice roll.

Greek yoghurt, fruit and very berry Jordan's granola is my go-to.

Yellowdays · 27/02/2023 09:58

I just ate a small bowl of yogurt and half a slice of sourdough with avocado on it.

Mushrooms, fried in a tiny bit of oil, on toast is delicious.

I don’t like porridge but do like overnight oats so try them maybe? I make them with a portion of oats, a vanilla muller light (or similar) and frozen raspberries - you could use strawberries (also you can use fresh but obvs frozen last longer.)

or as people say eggs in the microwave - I chop up ham, mushroom and spinach small at home then at work crack two eggs in a bowl, whisk them up, add the ham and veg and microwave in 30 second bursts mixing in between

Agree - do you feel it needs to be hot? If not, what about boiling eggs and making some kind of egg sandwich/baguette/wrap at home - with bacon/avo/smoked salmon etc? If you do want it hot, a boiled egg left in the shell and wrapped in tin foil stays surprisingly warm and would probably still be warm by the time you got to the office so you could take your carb separately.

Breakfast muffins - quite a few recipes can either be frozen after baking and will defrost while you head into work then you can warm up in the microwave. Or find a recipe where you keep the batter in the fridge and bake in the morning (I have a nice little recipe for banana muffins I can whip up from scratch in 15 minutes in the air fryer for example and they're popular over here).

Fat fluffy banana pancakes can be microwaved to heat up on arrival at work but might not be your thing.

Flapjacks or breakfast bars? Made yourself or ones you buy. Still cheaper than buying breakfast at the canteen.

Avocado and bacon makes a great breakfast sandwich.
