How much salt

Can someone tell me how much salt a 10 month old should have in their diet. I know an adult is no more than 6 grms a day but can find no info on babies.

Not really sure but if you're cooking meals, then don't add any salt at all. Don't give biscuits, crisps etc. Baby food should be regulated so i don't really think you can go far wrong.

A 10 month old shouldn't be having any salt.

lardylumps · 09/02/2008 17:16

Its just that she is eating everything we are now, and am worried about gravy and smoked ham and things that are quite high in salt. I never add anything to my cooking so no worries there but what about the salt all ready in foods.

Gravy and smoked ham wouldn't be the best foods for a 10 month old imho.

frazzledbutcalm · 09/02/2008 17:20

I'd cut down on giving her your food. you can get baby gravy, cook own meat instead of packet. Try to give as much natural as poss.

SlightlyMadShrek · 09/02/2008 17:21

values here

SlightlyMadShrek · 09/02/2008 17:22

Agree that I wouldn't give a 10m old gravy or smoked ham.

lardylumps · 09/02/2008 17:35

I am really worried now. She has been eating everything we do. I do not used processed food at all and everything is cooked fresh but she has been having stew's (made with stock cubes, roast dinners with gravy, pasta and home made sause but sometimes use pesto. This isn't every day but is every week.

God would i have done her liver any damage I am sure she has had to much salt.

I think it's 2g for children but don't know how young that applies to. I would avoid salty foods altogether for a baby that young. Even now i don't add salt at all to our meals and my DC are 3 and 5.

LyraSilvertongue · 09/02/2008 17:38

A little bit of gravy or stock every now and then won't do her any harm. But avoid where possible.

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 09/02/2008 17:39

Don't worry about what has gone on in the past but I wouldn't use stock cubes for example. She isn't one yet. Just be careful about salt in anything that she eats and avoid where possible. You could probbaly google salt content/amounts and it would help you.

shrooms · 09/02/2008 17:41

I doubt you've done long lasting damage, and it wouldn't be her liver that suffered anyway it would be her kidneys. The fact that you are reducingher salt intake now should prevent anything from happening and she will quickly adjust her tastes to less salt.

TBH if you were only giving her such foods once a week and not daily then she will probably have ben able to regulate it if she gets very little salt on other days IYSWIM.

lardylumps · 09/02/2008 17:46

I will never forgive myself if I have. HV said to me that she should be eating what ever we do and that it should be just cut up not mashed anymore. I didn't even think of the salt content because i never add any.

I can not believe i have been so stupid. Never again..

She will be fine. Just be careful from now on.

frazzledbutcalm · 10/02/2008 12:21

I don't think you've been stupid. From what you've said your food doesn't actually have a lot of salt anyway. Just cut out stock cubes, gravy, processed meat and shop bought sauces (if any).
