Home made shortbread – worth the trouble?

JackiePlace · 19/02/2023 12:14

Just that, really. I am making a homemade cookie/biscuit selection for gifts and am wondering whether to include shortbread. I've never made it so I'm wondering, is the homemade version any better than standard supermarket shortbread fingers?
I am talking about plain shortbread rather than anything with fancy flavours/additions.
What do you think?

Oh yes. Get a good recipe. Definitely better than shopbought!

RosaBonheur · 19/02/2023 12:18

It's one of the easiest things you can make. Use the 1-2-3 method.

crumpet · 19/02/2023 12:19

It’s so easy, and delicious

ComeTheFckOnBridget · 19/02/2023 12:21

Definitely! It's ridiculously easy to make and so tasty. Use real butter.

MySugarBabyLove · 19/02/2023 12:21

About five times the price though

RunnerDown · 19/02/2023 12:30

225g plain flour
110g cornflour
110g icing sugar
225g unsalted butter
put all the ingredients into your mixer . Put on a slow speed and mix till the dough comes together. Then raise the speed a little till you have a smooth dough. Roll out into 2 circles about 2 cm thick . Mark round the edges with a fork and prick the top all over. Rest in a cool place for an hour . Mark into triangles.
Cook at 150 fan for45-50 minutes. ( until you think they are ready - I prefer crisp shortbread to pale softer stuff)
Dust with sugar when it comes out the oven
Easy and delicious. Much nicer than shop bought

Crumpetdisappointment · 19/02/2023 12:31

i think its worth it,
so tasty

Mrsweasleysclock · 19/02/2023 12:32

I make it all the time. Super Easy.

50g sugar
100g butter
150g plain flour

Just double, triple as needed.

Make the dough, roll into little balls with your hands, press down gently with a fork. Bake on 180 until just starting to golden sprinkle a little extra sugar over the top while hot.

I don't bother with rolling out, cookie cutters etc. Hand rolled is perfectly fine and much easier.

Hedjwitch · 19/02/2023 12:32

Easy and lovely. I add marigold petals when Im making it in summer. So pretty

AdventFridgeOfShame · 19/02/2023 12:34

Yes it is nicer and worth the effort.
However, there are some right weirdos out there who thing anything hand made is unhygienic, full of bodily secretions and cat hair. They will thank you kindly and then bin it, they may even send you 27 messages to say how lovely it was.
Be careful who you gift your lovely shortbread to.

CatOnTheChair · 19/02/2023 12:37

Definitely worth it.
I put a small amount of rice flour in for extra shortness.

DramaAlpaca · 19/02/2023 12:47

Yes!

JackiePlace · 19/02/2023 16:26

Thank you all! I thought that with such basic ingredients it surely can't be any different, but you have convinced me. I will try your recipe @RunnerDown. And don't worry @AdventFridgeOfShame this is only going to a very select few (who already eat my baked goods). 😍

Hope it works out . The cornflour/ icing sugar makes it very short. Should have said mix on a slow speed until it just comes together. When I take it out the mixer it’s still very crumbly and I work it as little as possible.
Good Scottish recipe from a previous”baker” at 1 Devonshire Gardens ( a very posh hotel in Glasgow)

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 26/02/2023 13:58

Yes, much nicer
I think years ago a recipe had a bit of semolina in it too for extra crunchyness.

Definately no sultanas, raisins, caramel or chocolate chips <shudders>

JackiePlace · 26/02/2023 17:39

Sultanas in shortbread!? It's an abomination!

I confess to being one of these unless I'm confident in their kitchen hygiene Blush

I love shortcake - but let’s face it, statistically there will inevitably some pet-loving unhygienic types that let their cat lick its arsehole on the same kitchen surfaces they make your ‘delicious’ shortcake. You can never know with homemade stuff. Better to keep and eat your own shortcake and try not to be frugal with gifting. Always better to put some thought and money into it and buy something from a shop.
