I used to love it but have never made it myself. What's the best way? With or without onion? Mashed or sliced potato? What's your best recipe?

Thanks

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 09/02/2008 13:07

Cheese and potaot pie in our house is mashed potato with butter, milk and loads of cheese.

Maidamess · 09/02/2008 13:24

A bit of crushed garlic in it is nice. I have made cheese tuna and potaoe pie, by mixing , guess what, tuna in with some of the mash, then dumping cheesey mash on top. God I love mash.

Layer sliced potatoes, onion and cheese. Beat an egg with some milk, mixed herbs and english mustard and pour over the top. Bake. Eat .

You could put pastry over the top, but I never used to bother.

2/3rd mashed potato & 1/3rd mashed sweet potato
about 2 finely chopped onions fried in olive oil
Hands full of cheese

all mashed together

PurplePillow · 09/02/2008 19:45

that alll sounds nice BUT

cheese and tattie pie is mashed potato with more milk than normal and then some butter

then you whip an egg into it and fork it through well and add tons of cheese, pop it in the oven till the top goes lovely and browned

bloody gorgeous

Patent: PurplePillow

TrinityRhino · 09/02/2008 19:47

that post before was not purplepillow being all protective of her recipe
I'm at her house and forgot to change my login lol

I was just adding that on the end as I didn't know the recipe before purple told me

PaulaYatesbiggestFan · 09/02/2008 19:48

do they have pastry?

pinkspottywellies · 09/02/2008 20:21

My mum used to put a tin of tomatoes in the bottom of the dish then put the cheese and mashed potato on top I think I'd rather just lather it with ketchup when cooked!

PaulaYatesbiggestfan,

I only make a pastry case if we are taking the pie on a picnic (we are very kind to pies in our house!).

My recipe is otherwise the same as purplepillows with the addition of parmesan and finely chopped onion.

Here's a recipe for Panakelty a very old Northumbrian dish. I'd add about half a pint of veggie (or whatever) stock and oven bake rather than pan fry. That'show my mother used to make it. Panakelty

homity pie lovely

Janni · 10/02/2008 15:34

Monkeytrousers - oh that brings back happy memories. We called it panhaggarty - you've reminded me to try making it. I used to love it!

Oh, that Homity pie look like a posh version. I can't do the original my mother would make as it had tinned corned beef added layed between the pots and onions - and I am now veggie. But will give the Homity a try!

Yes, Janni, it is sometimes known as Pan Haggerty!

How'd it work out MF??

meridian · 11/02/2008 10:02

monkeytrousers- its DH fav potato recipe.. though sometimes I just do it as a potato bake and leave out the pastry as i'm not that big of a pastry type person... must sort out a picture for it sometime.

monkeytrousers · 11/02/2008 15:06

Yes, don't think I'll bother with the pastry.
