Using home made mincemeat in a supermarket ready cooked tart case?

I've got some homemade mincemeat left over from making mince pies at Christmas but feel too lazy to make more.

Does anybody know if I could just buy a tart case thats already cooked from a supermarket and put the mincemeat in there. Then just serve it with some cream?

What I mean is not cook it again as mince pies would be.

You'd need to cook it, as the suet needs to melt into the mincemeat. Could you heat the mincemeat in a pan then put into the case? That might work.

Good question. Are supermarket tart cases fully baked? Or are they the pastry equivalent of part-baked rolls?

I can't help feeling that it would be a bit like putting mincemeat on a biscuit. Edible, but not a mince pie. Once you've put the mincemeat in the cases, what's the trouble of baking them for a few minutes?

My home-made mincemeat does not contain suet.

mincemeat doesn't need cooking it's full of sugar. You could heat it in the microwave to melt the suet/fat. Or you could serve it warm with icecream and a drop of brandy....lush

That's nice. Not helping OP though is it?

Most cases are easy to eat but are nicer cooked through imo.

WashAsDelicates · 17/02/2023 12:28

OP's may not, either. Just pointing out that her mincemeat may not need cooking.

Thanks for the answers so far. The mincemeat was cooked when I made it.

I am now wondering whether I could cook the mincemeat in the precooked case for 10 minutes or so. That's how long I cook my mince pies when I make them so it's obviously long enough for the mincemeat inside then.

I do know I'm being lazy but I don't know what to do with the leftover mincemeat which is just sitting in a plastic box at the moment staring at me.

I add it to flapjacks to make fruity ones. Not too much effort involved in that.

Leftover mincemeat:

Make bread, butter and mincemeat sandwiches, and lay them in a buttered dish. Mix eggs, milk and sugar together and pour over the sandwiches. Leave to soak up. Sprinkle with sugar and bake until golden. Hey presto - fabulous bread pudding.

Alternatively, serve with vanilla ice-cream.

😋

You could also buy some puff pastry - I just cut it into squares, put a dollop of mincemeat in the middle and bring the corners together to make parcels. Or you could use the mincemeat in baked apples. Or as a pancake filling next week?

If there's a lot to use up, you could also heat it up again and let it simmer for a minute, then bottle it in sterilised jam jars. It should keep perfectly until next Christmas.

I make a big job lot of mincemeat every few years and bottle it. Sealed jars seem to last forever, and unsealed jars keep perfectly in the fridge.
