Anyone got a foolproof way of preparing fresh ginger?

I'm so sick of dicing it as finely as I can and still biting into chunks in the finished dish!

I need a garlic press but for ginger, right? Is it this?

Any thoughts or tips really welcome!

I buy it in a jar as a puree.

Fleur405 · 11/02/2023 16:43

grate it with a little hand held grater (like you’d use for Parmesan)

Skiphopbump · 11/02/2023 16:43

I buy it frozen.

SimonSaysNo · 11/02/2023 16:43

I just grate it using a fine grater

JJJSchmidt · 11/02/2023 16:43

I grate mine

haggisaggis · 11/02/2023 16:44

Easiest way is to peel it, cut into chunks and freeze. Then use a fine grater. Grates really easily when frozen.

Frozen cubes

Use a teaspoon to scrape the peel off and then use a fine grater as pp have said

happysunr1se · 11/02/2023 16:47

I use a wasabi grater. It's a metal plate with spikes on it, no holes so it doesn't really grate rather it sort of smooshes it. If you are doing garlic and ginger I do the garlic first then the ginger as the ginger is fibrous so removes the garlic remains

I buy frozen cubes. 100% ginger, it's Taj brand, think I got it in both Sainsburys and Morrisons

FrankieStein403 · 11/02/2023 16:53

Break/chop into whatever straight pieces the root allows, peel, freeze.

Grate from frozen when needed - if you want thin strips, cut off the inch or so you need, allow to defrost then slice as you want.

I freeze it and grate it as needed. Much easier to grate when frozen and reduces waste too

Persipan · 11/02/2023 17:01

I buy it in a tube.

MaverickGooseGoose · 11/02/2023 17:02

Grater plate

MaverickGooseGoose · 11/02/2023 17:03

Like this. You don't even need to peel it, same for garlic.

Although I do love a chunk of ginger!

Buy frozen ginger? It is mushier when it defrosts.

If you are going to be making lots of curries buy a bag of frozen cubes (Taj brand is probably the easiest to get hold if), otherwise I think most supermarkets sell small bags alongside the frozen herbs and chilli (certainly Waitrose and Iceland do).

WeCome1 · 11/02/2023 17:19

Don’t all recipes say to grate it? Using the finer grater size.
The purée in a jar is fine too.

MalevolentHairyEyeball · 11/02/2023 17:23

Ginger purée in a tube from Aldi. Makes bugger all difference in 99% of dishes.

sauvignonplonk1 · 11/02/2023 17:26

I buy this

I buy the jars of purée from the Asian section at the supermarket

WashAsDelicates · 11/02/2023 17:29

Go to Waitrose.

Buy this. (Buy several packets if you don't normally shop there.)

Freeze it.. dont bother to peel first.. then grate as and when you need it... peel disappears when you cook it.

gogohmm · 11/02/2023 17:31

Frozen ginger from the world foods freezer section, ditto garlic

CaptainMyCaptain · 11/02/2023 17:36

Skiphopbump · 11/02/2023 16:43

I buy it frozen.

So do I. Much easier and it doesn't go off.

CaptainMyCaptain · 11/02/2023 17:37

Also frozen garlic, chilli and herbs.
