lentil bolognese? Lasagne?

StripeyMamaSpanx · 07/02/2008 11:28

Er... Dhal? Lentil Roast? Lentil soup (fry onion, add chopped carrot, apple, and lentils, boilr for 20 mins, puree).

Kbear · 07/02/2008 11:29

I chuck red lentils in soups, stews, bolognese sauces, lasagne etc.

Twiglett · 07/02/2008 11:29

I should like to see your packet of red lentils (thinking lentil and carrot soup) and raise you a packet of adzuki beans (anything that isn't red dragon pie please)

Suusage casserole:
Cook sausages first. Remove from saucepan. Fry off onions, carrots and any other veg you have and may like to add (courgettes, red peppers, leeks, cauliflower, broccoli are all good). Add tin of chopped tomatoes, some herbs (herbes de provence are good, otherwise parsley and oregano are my faves) and a couple of handfuls of red split lentils. Add some Worcestershire sauce. Add the sausages back in.

Add enough water or vegetable stock to cover everything. Bring to the boil, then lower heat, cover and simmer until the lentils and veg are cooked. Stir occasionally.

It's also nice if you add some chard or spinach near the end of cooking.

a mild curry.

Fry off some onion, and any veg you have (carrots, celery). Add a tiny bit of curry powder, or paprika.

Bring to boil in veg stock, then simmer for 20mins or so.

Serve with rice or naan

Lentil Mush (this is one of my student foods that I stll eat).

You throw the lentils into a big saucepan of water with onion, garlic, a stock cube and any veg you feel like. Boil until it all falls apart, then serve with grated cheese or grilled bacon on top.

Twiglett - I have just googled some godamawful aduki bean recipes, why not use them in some craft projects - mosaics, musical instruments, sprout them?

Anyway, I have a box of quinoa, and am fed up of tabbouleh - gwan, what about quinoa??

foofi · 07/02/2008 11:39

You could do a kind of shepherd's pie by putting mash on top of Kathy' 'lentil mush'. Can add anything you like - carrots, parsnips, celery etc.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 07/02/2008 11:39

Also Twiglett you could grind them up and use the resulting powder as an exfoliant as part of your skincare routine. (The BodyShop used to sell 'Japanese washing grains' which were just ground up aduki beans.)

Only the one I wrote (scroll down)! It is delicious!

Mine will eat very mild dahl. A really good one for children I find, is from an old cranks recipe book. I have lost it some where over the years, but make an approximation of the original recipe quite often.
Simmer your lentils until soft and the water has been asorbed (so just cover the lentils). Sorry I am doing this backwards maybe about 200g of lentils

Meanwhile finely chop an onion and fry with some oil and a crushed garlic clove. When lentils are done, put in a big bowel along with onions and garlic. Stir in 100g of breadcrumbs, a tbs of tomatoe puree, a tsp of dried thyme, salt and pepper and a beaten egg. Combine it all and then add 150g of cheese or more if you like it really cheesy.

Put the mixture into an oiled baking tin, I use a bread loaf tin. And bake for 25 minutes on a medium heat until slightly brown on top.

Serve it in slices

cadelaide · 09/02/2008 22:50

thanks all.
Overrun, yours looks good but I would hesitate to prepare it in a big bowel

Whoops That might well take away some of the healthiness of it

Chicken, sweet potato and lentil curry. Just gorgeous
Basically just fry chicken / sweet potato in curry paste, add coconut milk, stock, lentils and frozen peas. Cook 20 mins.
