I want to gain weight

Hello everyone, I know most people want to lose weight. However, I want to gain some weight. What advice would you give me? I was 64kg before and lost 10kg during my first pregnancy nearly 2 years ago. I am now 21 weeks pregnant for my second baby and only gained around 3kg so far as I was struggling to eat properly. I find it hard to put on weight again! Any advice?

I lost a lot of weight through an illness two years ago. I was looking very ill to say the least of it.

Anyway, eating was a trial, but I tried my best and at last the weight is coming back on, that's two flippin years!

My issue was certain foods were making me sick due to the nature of the illness. So I chose things that I could eat and fortified them any way I could. For instance,

Porridge made with full fat milk, and cream on top.
Ground nuts in full fat Greek yogurt (that was a staple that kept me alive for a while!)
Weetabix and Oatibix on full fat milk + ground nuts
Berry smoothie full fat milk and protein powder.
Coffee made with milk
Wholemeal bread and lots of butter.
Eggs, eggs eggs.

Veg I couldn't digest for a while, so took supplements. I couldn't eat meat or fish either so used protein powder in drinks, cereal etc.

I am now at ideal weight for height, But I am eating everything again so will probably have to be more careful of what I put in my gob. You forget that when you had to load up the calories at one point!

I've always had a stable life and no problem with money. To be honest I am just ashamed to go to a food bank and ashamed to tell anybody

You need to put your health, and your baby’s health, ahead of any sort of feelings, I am afraid. There are ways to get sufficient food, lots of other people suddenly find themselves in similar situations, and you’ll find yourself treated with care and dignity by staff and volunteers. Just go for it. Any of us could find ourselves in need at any time. It just happens that it’s your turn just now.

Drink the calories!

Full fat milk with milkshake mix (crusha is my fav) it also helps if u have heartburn (well a wee tiny bit).

If u like cream put it on everything double full fat stuff. I was shocked using a tub of double cream with dinner the other night to make a sauce (50% reduced fat version) it was 700 calories in about 300ml I couldn't believe it! Cakes will def help too!

I think 3kg is decent amount for 20wks. I only put 3lb on by then but by time baby was born had put on 2 stone so it mostly went on last trimester which is how it should work.

There is absolutely no shame in going to a foodbank. I live in a small town and our local food bank is in huge demand. We have a great community spirit here and have a "community kitchen" too that provides free hot meals and toiletries for those who are struggling, and a community fridge which is available to anyone. Look on your local Facebook page to see if there are any of these groups in your area. Go shopping at around 6pm to get reduced price food. If you have a co-op they do fantastic reductions . Find out the time they do it and shop then.

I am really picky with food as well. I am also lactose intolerant and I still try to eat or drink things with milk. For my first pregnancy most weight loss was because of stress and not able to eat( caused by my husband being unfaithful) I forgave him because of the baby. Something I regret now. It's just too many things that has happened...

I will try to do that. Sometimes I fancy something I cannot afford in the supermarket and end up being hungry.

I’m so sorry it’s difficult OP. As well as the food bank there are healthy start vouchers which you should qualify for.

www.healthystart.nhs.uk/how-to-apply/

Speak to your midwife. They are there to help and you need to look after your health when you are pregnant - the baby will take everything they need and it will be your health that suffers. Take care of yourself, you can’t be a good mum if you are unwell yourself.

OP, I see from the other thread you started today that you are currently staying with your mother and several adult siblings. I am sure they wouldn’t want you to be going without food so please will you just tell one of them that you can’t afford to buy enough food for yourself as well as your child, and they will help you.

Thank you all for your advice. I am now more aware of my calorie intake and paying more attention to the things I buy. I hope to see a difference soon.
