Boring question about salt content in bread...

Which brand (wholemeal) has the lowest salt content?

Looked at my loaf this morning, discovered it has half a gram per slice

I don't know the exact content of sliced breads, but they are all around that level, and fairly high. The best you could buy would probably be fresh from a bakery, a known health brand from a health food shop, or best of all make it yourself with just a quarter of the recipe call for salt. You soon get used to less.

normally around 0.4/0.5g per slice - dont know any lower than that

notnowbernard · 05/02/2008 18:51

Really didn't realise that was the norm!

We eat pretty healthily in our house but I have to say we all border on the Bread-Monster side of life...

Ok, to make my own what do I need?

you need a breadmaker! brilliant things! and if you eat a lot of bread/are a big family, buy a big one, don't mess around like we did- also, if you want a big one, look for one with a long as opposed to deep bread pan, that way you get sensible sized slices- hard to describe without waving my hands around, but you'll know when you start looking at the machines

Have just mentioned to dp the possibility of getting a breadmaker... he is NOT KEEN.

Thinks it will be a waste of money, we'll use it for a week and then the novelty will wear off, "nightmare to clean"

Help me persuade him otherwise!

deffo not a nightmare to clean, pans are non stick- it's really VERY easy, so no reason not to use it IYSWIM, bread is delicious, and (this is why we use it) you can make organic bread far cheaper than you can buy it. and it makes great pizza dough too.

I wipe mine down with a damp cloth

And sometimes make 2 loaves a day

Just baked my first loaf yesterday - without a bread maker. It is possible to do by hand and didn't take too much time. The instructions are on the back of the packet of flour.

Maybe try a couple of times before forking out for a bread maker.
