What foods soothe acid reflux?

CartoBarto · 14/01/2023 22:35

I'm doing everything I can to manage and be careful with what I eat, but as I'm still learning what triggers it some things are giving me horrible acid reflux. I've heard that some people eat candies, and some drink tea, but what else do people eat or drink to soothe acid reflux? Thanks for your replies!

Milk. When I was pregnant i'd drink milk with ice

Milk is actually not recommended in the long term as the fat in it makes your stomach produce more acid to break it down so it works short term but doesn't actually help in the long.

I don't find any food helps when I have it. Gaviscon and Omeprazole are the only thing that works. In a pinch, bicarb mixed with water neutralises the acid.

I agree with TheRookie - when I get an acid reflux attack, the best thing to do is to stay away from food and drink for a bit, just have some still water if you need it. But eventually you do get hungry. If you're not sure what triggers an attack for you, I'd recommend trying things as much "in isolation" as you can, so you can focus on what works and eliminate what doesn't.

I'd try:

bananas - ripe or slightly overripe, not green!
green vegetables - raw is best, unappetising as it may be! Or steamed alone, no additions. Kale or spinach would be a good start. Broccoli is also good.
grits - absolutely plain
oatmeal - instant is OK and so is traditional, but try it first with nothing in it
rice - plain! I'd try brown rice first, or long grain if you can source it, then white - and I'd try it cold first, maybe from leftovers or a microwave pack.
root vegetables - these vary a lot, carrots trigger me but turnips, parsnips and yams/sweet potatoes are good. No butter!
watermelon - already mentioned upthread, this is a good option.

When you say candies and tea, are you thinking of ginger, or something else? Ginger can be good for immediate relief but again, I'd keep it separate from any other ingredients, at least to start. Stay away from tea with caffeine - herbal may be OK. Definitely stay away from carbonated beverages and alcohol.

The only thing that works for me is Gaviscon. I’ve been told by a doctor that fat in foods also relaxes the muscle that should be blocking the acid from rising from the stomach. So agedasiago’s list looks like the best options.

Warm lentil a veg thick soup.
No tomato based things.
Warm rice pudding
Siping warm water or tea.
Toast
Rich tea biscuits
Baeage foods like risotos, pasta on bad days

Gentle massages to the diagram and downwards.
Same on either side of the spine.
Always sleep on your left so your stomach is below.and or slightly raised.
Avoid bending forwards even quickly instead sqaut for things.

It's different for everyone so don't be taken in by diet culture or wellness tits telling you to eliminate foods. Because it's often way more multi facited as to why you have an attack.

Icy cold soya milk sometimes. Mainly just omeprazole!

BlackForestCake · 17/01/2023 08:43

Go to the doctor and get a prescription for omeprazole, then go back to eating what you like.
