Ok - baking bread for the first time. It has done the required time in the oven, but how do I know it is cooked all through. I don't want to slice it and find it is all doughy inside.

Why did i decide to have a domestic goddess moment toda?

I am an expat stay at home Dad who lives in Germany. In a village we used to stay at in the Alps they used to make these fantastic bread rolls which are called "Semmel" in German. They put in potato pieces which I can attest taste deliscious. Try uwing grated potato and perhaps even water left from boiling the spuds.

I am into the bread baking thing down here too. You can actually go to the health food shop and they grind the flour for you - I bought a kilo yesterday. Can't wait to try it.

I read somewhere on the web that there is a revival in village bakeries in Britain. In my town here you can buy tasty fresh baked bread from small bakeries everywhere.

I agree - we're in Germany too and the bread is so much nicer. I particularly like the sweet ones in the shape of little men, complete with pipe! Plus, in every bakery you go in, they always give the children a bread roll for free. Once I'd got DD out of wailing "But I wanted a chocolate one" it all went ok
