I admit to being slow on the uptake, but I've just realised that oxo cubes have MSG in them. What can I use instead???

I am even slower here...what is MSG?????

ginnedup · 04/02/2008 12:15

I was going to ask that? Is it something else we should worry about?

FAQ · 04/02/2008 12:15

ditto 3andnomore - what is MSG???

Scampmum · 04/02/2008 12:16

Kallo Organic - Knorr have MSG in them too (which was why I was so horrified that Marco Pierre White or someone started endorsing them!)

Scampmum · 04/02/2008 12:17

MSG is monosodium glutamate or flavour enhancer 621. Commonly found in chinese food - can have nasty health consequences such as headaches, insomnia etc.

MegaLegs · 04/02/2008 12:18

MSG - Mono sodium glutamate

I second the Kallo organic ones. They do the basic chicken, veg and beef but also a lovely french onion one.

TrinityRhino · 04/02/2008 12:20

msg is the stuff they cram into all processed food to make it taste 'better'
Its addictive for our taste buds.....why some people cant get enough of cheap, shitty processed food
its the msg
not good for you either
Its in alot of things though........

TigerFeet · 04/02/2008 12:21

MSG is Monosodium Glutamate - an artificial flavour enhancer, E621.

I'm trying to cut stuff like that out of our diet - I want my food to taste of something because it has nice things in it - not chemicals

I don't think it is something to worry about per se, just unneccessary imho.

I use Marigold vegetable bouillion - it is really great. It's organic and you can get vegan and low sodium versions as well.

whoops loads of x posts (phone rang mid writing)

It was the Knorr that alerted me to it - I read the ingredients on a Knorr pack I bought and saw it on there, so checked the oxo packs too.

Kallo you say? I have heard of them. I will give them a try. Thanks muchly

The Marigold low sodium would be good for my soup habit.

Thanks all, very helpful

Fio I work in the food industry so am very food aware, I have been using oxo for 20 years and I had no idea. Funny what you take for granted isn't it????

oh god, I'm really annoyed I didn't notice this. We work really hard to avoid MSG. Oxo, no more. There's no excuse is there? I'm betting it's in my gravy granules too.

ladytophamhatt · 04/02/2008 12:28

Oh, didn't know this either.

Crafty buggers aren't they??

phew, am I glad that I wasn't teh only one that didn't know...but now it's been spelled out I remember reading something about it.
No idea which products don't haver it in though, sorry!

hairtwiddler · 04/02/2008 12:59

Watch out for hydrogenated fats in some stock cubes too. Just found some in chicken stock powder recently.

rebelmum1 · 04/02/2008 13:05

You can make your own with left over meat, carrot, onion, celery and parsley and a bay leaf. I do it at the weekend you just chuck it in a stock pot add water to cover and let it simmer a way for a couple of hours, drain and cast away the bits (give to dog). Other than that I use bouillon.

The reason I checked the Knorr ones was because I used a Pork one in a lentil & bacon soup I was making and it just made it taste artificial.

Really, really annoying.

I do love Chinese takeaway though, but now I can taste the flavour enhanced flavour in it
