What can be used as an alternative to chocolate that can be used to stencil shapes and dried into the shape in the fridge? Do melted marshmallows have the same usability and dry solid once refrigerated? Can I add a food colouring to make them black? Would this affect them drying solid? I want to make some "cobwebs" which would stand on top of a cake with the use of support rods but I can't use chocolate due to an allergy. Thanks for any help.

I think that would be a no on marshmallows.

If chocolate is not viable then sugarwork/caramel is probably the next option.

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 01/01/2023 18:51

Melted boiled sweets would likely work

BlockedbyHfromSteps · 01/01/2023 18:53

Make some caramel with black food colouring and make the cobwebs quickly before it sets.

I don’t think marshmallows will work here.

Could you use fondant? Mixed that stuff that hardens it? I can't think of the name. I've googled but it looks American and the stuff I used was Uk

Numberunknown · 01/01/2023 19:04

Carob ? I’ve never used it but know it’s used as an alternative to chocolate

dementedpixie · 01/01/2023 19:04

Could you use dairy free chocolate?

piefacedClique · 01/01/2023 19:07

What about sugar paste? Used to make flowers etc. I use it to make mermaid tails…. Dries solid and can be coloured.

Do the cobwebs have to be black?
If not I'd make sugar cobwebs.

LetsDoThis2023 · 01/01/2023 19:11

Black fondant?

TheMindfulMum · 01/01/2023 21:20

Thanks for all the helpful replies x

Dairy free could be used but he doesn't like dairy free alternatives. I was hoping to make them with something he would eat.

Would fondant dry hard?

I will definitely look at sugar paste. Thanks so much 🙏🏼

Tylo powder kneeded into fondant will set really hard. Its not great tasting imo, but its definitely edible! Well, it doesn't taste bad, it'll be a texture thing, dry and crunchy.

dottycats · 01/01/2023 21:34

What about candy melts? They come in loads of colours including black. Usually used for coating cake pops and dry hard

Thesearmsofmine · 01/01/2023 23:00

I was going to suggest candy melts too.
