Baking challenge

I used to be ok at baking, but just stopped doing it and lost the knack a bit.

I'm setting myself a little challenge for 2023 where I bake something every week. It doesn't have to be anything fancy. I might start with scones or something.

I will share pics on here of my bakes.

If anyone is a beginner baker, or just out of the way of it, and fancies joining me, then please do!

I’ll join you when I can.

Great @Fivemoreminutes1

I'm going to bake something tomorrow. Will get the stuff today

Count me in, although it probably won't be every week

I made Sophie Dahl's toffee apple and pear crumble for our Christmas pudding. It was totally delicious. I started with a crumble because it's easy, but hoping to do more baking.

The crumble uses spelt flour, which dh picked up for me, and oats, so I decided to make some spelt bread (always hopeless at bread!). Stupidly, I tried slow-cooker bread which didn't work very well but tasted nice enough - I'll use the rest of the spelt flour to make proper bread, cooked in the oven!

That sounds lovely @Jux

I am going to start easy too, so either scones or soda bread tomorrow, or maybe proper bread if I have yeast in the cupboard, but that's a bit more faff

And thanks for the warning - I will use the oven!

I love this idea op. Not sure what I will start with. Scones too maybe.

I'm just having a rummage in my cupboard to find ingredients for my bread. The flour was bbe December and the yeast was bbe September....I don't think it will poison me, but it may not rise properly? I'm going to give it a go anyway. Wish me luck!

will post a pic if it isn't a complete disaster 😂

I make soda bread every week. It's easy and delicious. If buttermilk is unavailable use 1 tablespoon (15ml) lemon juice to 250ml milk.
Recipe
300g flour
1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
1 teaspoon salt
250ml buttermilk
Method
Mix dry ingredients together then add the milk.
turn out onto a floured board and knead briefly form into a ball, pat it down a bit, place on greased tray, cut some slashes across the top. Bake in hot oven for approx 30 mins

Thanks zebra. I love soda bread! So nice with soup...or cheese...or jam! I'm a fan.

Hello to everyone joining in as well btw!
👋😊

I have made my bread dough and am just waiting for it to prove.

Tadah! Some bread. It's a bit more well done than I'd planned, but we'll call it crusty...

Delicious!

IET · 01/01/2023 18:21

I'm just eating a piece with butter and it does taste pretty good (if I do say so myself)

IET it looks lovely. I believe Mr Hollywood would appprove of the colour (though I agree with you and would prefer it slightly less well done). I'm sure it is delicious regardless of how crunchy or not it is! That's just personal cchoice anyway.

Zebra I used to make soda bread quite often (years and years ago), couldn't get buttermilk to save my life but used yoghurt instead. It worked well, though I haven't had the proper stuff for so long I cna't remember it well enough to compare. I'll try your reciipe after I've done my spelt flour load which will be next week I think.
