I am going to make some veg chilli later and just happen to have some dark chocolate in the cupboard (don't know how it got there)

Should I bung some in?

Yup - can't really taste it, but adds a richness.
Do turkey in chocolate too (also a mexican recipe) - although imho that's more of a waste of chocolate.

MeMySonAndI · 03/02/2008 14:42

No, just eat it while you cook

fortyplus · 03/02/2008 14:43

Worth a try! I once made chilli vodka chocolates from the Green & Black's chocolate cook book - they were nice but weird.

MAMAZON · 03/02/2008 14:46

Asda sell a chocolate chilli sauce.

it is divine.

Tatties · 03/02/2008 14:48

LOL at just eat it while you cook

I think I will give it a go then!

Yes, it makes it richer. I also put cumin in the chilli

Tatties · 03/02/2008 14:54

I think I usually put cumin in MB, I love the smell

don't do it unless you are going to do it properly i.e. cook it for hours and reduce it thoroughly and start sweating onions carrots celery and garlic and then cookingout your aromatics and so on, Waste of chocolate otherwise. it all has to be an unctuos blend and not at all watery

Tatties · 03/02/2008 14:56

Yep, ok, at what point would you put the chocolate in?

suzywong · 03/02/2008 14:58

in final 15 minutes of simmering and I would grate it in. Don't let it boil. And have some creme fraiche type thing with chopped coriander and spring onions to serve.
What time do you want me round?

glad to see you didn't take offence at my Food Policing, but there are Standards to be Maintained, you understand

best of luck to you, do let me know how it turns out

IMO, if you have a drop of shiraz to de-glaze the pan with after cooking hte spices then that is not a Bad Thing.

god, I 'm such a PONCE

ivykaty44 · 03/02/2008 15:05

I eat it neat - it never made it to the pot

suzywong · 03/02/2008 15:06

and please put a pinch of sugar in when you add the tomatoes after coating all the veg and beans with the aromatics, onion mix, wine and oil. It balances the acidity and deepens the flavour

thank you

oooh chocolate chilli is very popular in mexico. They have a mole (molay) sauce that you pour on chicken. mmmmm lovely.

do it!!

BananaPudding · 03/02/2008 15:13

In Cincinnati everyone puts chocolate in their chili! And then...they serve it on top of spaghetti. I'm not sure why though...

janeite · 03/02/2008 15:58

I like a couple of squares of really dark chocolate and a squirt of lime juice in my veggie chilli which makes t really lovely and dark and intense.

Nigella's recipe puts cocoa powder in, which adds a nice richness (I used Green and Blacks).

MeMySonAndI · 03/02/2008 16:49

TBH to say that chilli with chocolate is mole is a heressy, there are far more things going in mole than this. (12-32 different species and it could take several days to cook it from scratch)

spices even!

foxythesnowman · 03/02/2008 16:51

Wendy Richards (aka Pauline Fowler) does.

I have no idea how I know that, I just do

milkyJammy · 03/02/2008 16:57

I put a bit of cocoa powder in

Tatties · 03/02/2008 18:58

Dp said can you put a creme egg in

Anyway, I made it (following most of your instructions Suzy) and it was good, the chocolate really made a difference to the texture, it was nice and velvety and smooth. Thanks for the help
