I'm making a shepherd's pie with sweded topping instead of potato-the whole recipe says it takes 30 mins but I've boiled and boild the swede and it's still full of lumps !

My mum says no, it is just a tough swede!!!

MaureenMLove · 02/02/2008 19:42

It should get soft. Don't understand why tbh! It takes the same sort of time as carrots to go soft.

Is it past its best.

I cooked some th other night that was a bit past its sell by date and it was a bit lumpy.

hairtwiddler · 02/02/2008 19:48

Can you add a bit of milk and use a hand blender to get out the lumps?

Neverenough · 02/02/2008 19:56

Aha will try the blender idea-thanks! It has happened before so maybe Tesco always sell old swede.
Thanks everyone!

Actually this one was from Sainsbury's and had no use by date! Anyway it looked and smelt ok.

Swede takes balrdy ages to go soft IME, how big did you cut it? 1cm cube will go soft if steamed for around 25-30mins.

ClareVoiant · 02/02/2008 20:07

its also a little watery, though, so if your using it as a topping, it may be wise to mix it with potato, or sweet potato.

Neverenough · 02/02/2008 20:51

Well I thought it was about 1cm cubes but some were smaller-tasted ok though mixed with yoghurt and no one complained!

I'll try steaming next time though, thanks.
