Can't remember - is goat's cheese ok while pregnant?

I've got a pregnant friend coming for lunch and am planning what to feed her (plus a vegetarian) - is goat's cheese ok? I only like it hot so it's not something I would have bothered about during my own pregnancies. Just can't remember.

I ate it when I was pregnant, working on the assumption that if it's cooked it would be ok. I have no idea whether that's medically true but I heard it somewhere and it was good enough for me!

should say on the packaging if it is pasturised. if it is it should be ok. but if you are cooking it anyway it should be ok either way.

SlightlyMadShrek · 01/02/2008 14:39

If it is pastuerised its OK I think

I agree on the cooked thing... What if it's hot but not actually cooked, ie not piping hot all through? I just don't want to get to the supermarket and look at the label and not have an alternative as backup.

Do we reckon there are some that are indeed pasteurised? It's a big supermarket so should have the range.

not sure that it is pasteurised - remember asking my mw about this and she said i really shouldn't eat it but i didn't think she really knew but was covering herself! think i may have had some anyway

pussycatmomma · 01/02/2008 14:42

no, no, no, no..........nooooooooooooooooo.
Avoid any goat related products!!
Just in case you hadnt grasped it, thats a no to goats cheese in pregnancy.
Hope I have been of valuable service!

food standards agency says it is OK as long as it is not Chevre.

However they also say that Chevre is hte most common kind in the UK, so chances are it will be teh one to avoid if that makes sense.

I don't see why you should avoid all goat products in poreg? Surely if it is pasteurised that is hte only concern?

NO to goat-related products? I'm not aware that women of Caribbean origin are warned to stop eating goat curry just because they're up the duff.

Any cheese is fine, provided it's pasteurised and is not blue-veined or matured with a white-mould rind.

My understanding is that the only issue re goats cheese in pg is that there is a greater risk of toxoplasmosis than there is in cows milk products, at least this is why you are supposed to stay away from goats and sheep when pg. Most people have immunity to toxo anyway, and you may have been already tested for immunity.
Having said that, I have no immunity to toxo but still ate lots of stinky cheeses, goats cheese included throughout my second pg.
