Salty ham!

paintitallover · 01/12/2022 15:18

I have been gifted a ham joint that was cooked yesterday, and which I find to be salty. I won't eat it as it is, as I'm not keen on very salty food.

Do you knowledgeable people have any ideas about how I can use it eg if it's cut up? I can think of soup but anything else? Thanks in advance.

Chop up and freeze. You can add it to pizzas, quiche , turkey and ham pie, make a terrine,

Did you soak it first?

SheWoreYellow · 01/12/2022 15:23

Yes to mix it with chicken and make a pie. Don’t add any stock or salt!

A gift, ready cooked.

In pies would be my first though. Could you put it in a white sauce with chicken, leeks etc and have on pasta. I make a lasagne with ham, leeks and mushrooms with a cheesy white sauce. You could have it in omelettes or with scrambled eggs.

You shouldn't really need to soak ham these days.

I'd chop it up and use it sparingly on pizza, in a chicken and ham pie, pea and ham soup, carbonara type pasta. Don't season what you are cooking it with.

In pies always works well, obviously don't put salt in anything else!

if it's plain this sounds strange but soak it after cooking in water for couple of hours. It take the saltiness away and doesn't interfere with the fibres

If you cook beans/bean stews you could add it and skip the stock. There are loads of recipes that use cooked ham, usually shredded or in very small pieces, so the salt wouldn’t be a problem. Just go for ones that use water rather than stock cubes.

Also would be good with lentils.

A minestrone style soup with vegetables and plenty of beans and pasta to absorb the salt is one idea. Also mixed bean casserole would do a similar job. Or perhaps potatoes, leeks and ham soup, or Dutch pea & ham soup.

I'm very rude for not returning to read and thank you. So thank you. Great ideas. ❤️
