Christmas snacks for one?

What would be on your savouries essentials list if you're looking for something a bit special to eat over Christmas week? I don't want to buy too much perishable food as my DH is a very picky eater, so it would basically just be me eating most of it. What food makes Christmas for you?

A selection of lovely cheeses with bread or crackers. Go to a cheesemonger and buy small portions of special and different cheeses you wouldn't normally have to avoid trying to eat your own body weight in cheese not that that would be the worst thing in the world.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 28/11/2022 19:12

Second the cheese suggestion - try some you haven't tried before. My fave is manchego with quince paste (M&S or Waitrose). Can't go wrong with mini pork pies and pickles, either, if you eat meat.

Diplidocus4 · 28/11/2022 19:15

I often work , shops were never open so had to be packed lunch .
I've usually stockpiled schloer or a nice fizzy drink , mini pork pies etc that will last a few days and always smoked salmon and cream cheese sandwiches.

Squashpocket · 28/11/2022 19:17

Yes to really nice cheese and crackers.

Also:

A packet of caramelised nuts

A small box of fancy chocolates

A small bottle of favourite liqueur or other alcohol.

That would do me nicely

AdaColeman · 28/11/2022 19:22

Smoked salmon, a one hundred gram packet will make two good sized open sandwiches. Add avocado, or cucumber if liked, or go Japanese with dipping sauce and pickled ginger.

Pack of sushi, something different for lunch.

Prawn cocktail, I stuff a large tomato with it, or have it with avocado.

Smooth duck pate, serve with toast and a glass of chilled dessert wine eg Sauternes.

Rare roast beef, make beef and anchovy sandwiches.

And speaking of anchovies... get a pot of Gentleman's Relish to have on hot buttered toast as an afternoon pick-me-up, or later as an apero.

Mimilamore · 28/11/2022 19:25

What Ada said... could eat that now

Cor, that sounds nice (files away for future reference). Also gravadlax in place of salmon.

King prawns in a light batter or breadcrumbs in the oven as directed by packaging and dipped whilst hot in a good sweet chilli sauce. 😋

Also maybe make your own salmon goujons and have a good tartar sauce with a decent amount of capers in. Enjoy! 🌹

Cheese 🧀

Deathraystare · 29/11/2022 15:01

and more cheese!!!

Bathtubbathing · 29/11/2022 15:50

A big pack of marinated king prawns
Pigs in blankets
Ingredients to bake your own bread
Cheese balls
Scampi fries
Different flavour pork pies

And yet another vote for lovely cheese and decent chutneys 😉

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 29/11/2022 16:34

A really good pork pie, from a butchers or bakers rather than the supermarket.

Another vote for a selection of cheeses. I love cheese with Hovis biscuits and red grapes.

I'd also love scampi from the freezer aisle, really naff and not exactly cordon bleu but not something I'd have normally

I love Ferrero Rocher and Lindtor chocolates, would gorge on those rather than have a pudding.

Winter2020 · 29/11/2022 16:38

Bake a Brie to eat as a fondu with crusty bread.
Yes to smoked salmon. I like it in a sandwich with soft cheese and a sprinkle of Worcestershire sauce.

DeeofDenmark · 29/11/2022 16:46

Peanuts, they go with most of the above savoury snacks. I only let myself have them at Christmas as they are so easy to inhale and so calortastic.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/11/2022 19:30

Cheese
Garners pickled onions and pickled red cabbage
Good crisps
Smoked salted almonds
Frozen vegetarian sausage rolls (or meat, if you're so inclined)
Crackers and veggie pâté
Fresh bread rolls to have with Quorn ham (or real) plus mustard or with Quorn chicken (or real) and cold stuffing

katesbushh · 01/12/2022 00:35

Lovely cheese. My favourite is m&s cornish extra mature cheddar.
Also m&s pickles are amazing.
Crusty bread.
Roast beef and mustard
Poppadoms and dips.
Crisps.
Pickled garlic.
Celery dipped in ranch dressing.

That's what I'd have just for me.

CrapBucket · 01/12/2022 00:38

I love this thread. Yes to all the cheese. And I know its not savoury but I'd add panettone. Every year I try and have a secret day to myself watching trash TV and eating a panettone.

Baldieheid · 01/12/2022 20:08

Cheeses, including Stilton. Nice crackers, the expensive seed ones, pickles and fruit.
Duck eggs as a treat instead of hens.
Toasted crumpets with butter and marmite.
Homemade sausage rolls (ready made puff pastry and lorne sausage for the filling) - calorifically deadly so I only make them twice a year.
Packs of veggie samosas to have with pickles and raita.
German spicy christmas biscuits
Fresh chestnuts to eat with salt....mmmmmm

Thanks for some great suggestions! Having a look at Ocado online as I've got a delivery booked for this weekend to pick up MIL's favourite tipple as a gift. I normally buy lots of cheese and crackers, so I'm having a hunt for something I haven't tried before. There's definintely a gap in the market for ready made cheeseboards for one which don't have blue cheeses. I like the beef and anchovy suggestion, I've never tried that combo and am enjoying eating anchovies a lot at the moment.

I'm thinking I may bake some bread on boxing day to have with the nice cheese and meat. I'm trying to come up with some of my own traditions as we go to MIL's every Christmas Day and my Mum's for New Year, so we don't really cook a fancy roast dinner at home.

Baking bread on Boxing Day is a lovely idea. I'm lazy and usually get in some of those half-baked baguettes.

Bathtubbathing · 02/12/2022 20:52

Man... I've just discovered Tesco Aioli.

It is soooooo good.

I can see the hips going thick over this stuff.

Definitely add it to your Christmas list.

Yes to smoked salmon. I like it in a sandwich with soft cheese and a sprinkle of Worcestershire sauce.

Try it with a smidgen of horseradish.
