Does gluten free bread toast ok?

Raera · 11/11/2022 18:41

Friends over for dinner tomorrow and one is gluten intolerant. I'm making a couple of fish pates for starter so toast would be better than bread.
I've got an unsliced warburtons white bloomer with sourdough.
Toast in the toaster or oven or leave it?
Many thanks

Toasted is significantly better than not, IME, though I'm not too familiar with the Warburtons.

Yes, definitely better toasted

Better toasted. But you can’t use the toaster, it’ll be full of gluten-containing crumbs. Toast it in the oven, on its’ own clean baking tray.

My friend uses a 'toastie pocket' to toast her gf bread because it tends to be crumbly and it reduces potential cross contamination with non gf breadcrumbs. You need to think carefully and avoid the sharing of knives, butter and pate if there is regular bread on the go. Just a crumb of non gf bread can make a gluten sensitive person ill for days.

The Warburtons sourdough is really nice. Toasted it is very good

Can you check with friend how severe their gluten intolerance is?

It can vary from "bit uncomfortable afterwards" to (IIUC) "spewing blood both ends and ill for weeks".

I'm at the mild end and wouldn't have to avoid toaster crumbs.

I agree with this. I have two GF people in my life. One is intolerant and doesn't have to worry abut cross contamination at all. One has celiac and has her own toaster, plus her own travel toaster as she is so sensitive.

However, in terms if the original question "does it toast ok?" the answer yes. I have been told that toasting GF bread help to mask the poor texture more than having it as just bread, and works in a toaster as well as under the grill.

It actually tastes better toasted.

But as pp said, you must avoid cross contamination, so don't put it in the toaster you use for normal bread.

But also, as toast only takes 3 minutes to make, you could ask your find when they arrive what they prefer.

I agree about intolerance. My H prefers gluten free bread and pasta because it makes him feel less 'full and bloated' - he doesn't actually have a proper intolerance as such . He isn't coeliac
